A nestling Coopers Hawk was admitted to care at the rehab center several days ago after having fallen from his nest. Luckily, it was brought into care so that it could be checked out for injuries from the fall. As a result of the fall, is does have some damage to its wing, which we are confident will heal correctly as it grows. Young birds of prey can be difficult to differentiate from one another but if you take a look at his looong toes and the color of his eyes, these characteristics help staff determine what species we are working with.

For staff, it is important to know what species we are caring for so we can feed them appropriate diet! Coopers Hawks primarily eat other bird species and few rodents. As a result, this young bird of prey needs to be raised on avian meat and not meat from mammals. While we do offer mice, occassionally, it is not his primary diet. We can expect this little one to grow into a quick, agile hunter over the coming weeks!

Just a few short hours ago staff partnered with INDOT Hoosier Helpers and Indiana State Police to safely rescue an adult Coyote from 80/94 that was found at a busy junction near an on/off ramp. As you can see from this photo, not only was the Coyote in imminent danger but also posed a risk to passing motorists who may have unintentionally gotten into an accident should it have run into the road.

Now safely with staff, the next step will be a thorough examination, including x-rays, to determine what injuries it possesses and what course of treatment will be. (See photo in comments.)

We do not know, yet, what next steps are, as all this transpired at 10:00am this morning. Donations are very much appreciated should you feel moved to contribute to his care, and the care of other injured wildlife at our center.

Did you know our ambassador birds of prey are trained to sit through and tolerate nail trims? Because they are housed in a captive setting, nails and beaks occassionally need to be maintained so that they stay healthy and do not overgrow. Staff works with our hawks and owls to ensure that the nail trims are as stress free as possible. This training also prevents the birds from having to be sedated by veterinary staff to have their nails/beaks trimmed. Owlfred received his quarterly pedicure this afternoon and did a wonderful job sitting while his nails were cared for!
