Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Dave Virijevich and Corporal Nolan Mancera on receiving the District 1 Law Enforcement Councilโ€™s Officer of the Year Award.

This prestigious recognition was presented on Friday, May 29, during the District 1 Law Enforcement Councilโ€™s Annual Awards Banquet at Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City.

The Officer of the Year Award is reserved for officers who, through an act of exceptional valor, clearly distinguish themselves by bravery, heroism, or outstanding courage, placing the safety and welfare of others above all other considerations.

Lt. Virijevich and Cpl. Mancera were honored for the outstanding courage they displayed during the Chesterton Police Departmentโ€™s officer-involved shooting incident in June 2025. Their actions exemplify the highest standards of professionalism, courage, and dedication to public safety.

The District 1 Law Enforcement Council is made up of police executives from Northwest Indiana agencies who work to promote professionalism, training, and networking among law enforcement leaders while enhancing public awareness of law enforcement and public safety issues.

We are incredibly proud of Lt. Virijevich and Cpl. Mancera and grateful for their continued service to the Chesterton community. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

We want to recognize and thank Sgt. Tony Alfaro, better known by the students as Officer Tony, the Liberty Middle School SRO, for the incredible impact he continues to make on the students of the Liberty Campus.

Programs like โ€œHold the Ropeโ€ remind us how important it is for young people to know they are supported, valued, and never alone. Sgt. Alfaro exemplifies what it means to โ€œhold the ropeโ€; building trust, offering encouragement, and being a steady presence for students through both the good days and the difficult ones.

The words shared by this student are a powerful reminder that school resource officers do far more than provide safety. They build relationships, mentor, inspire, and help shape the future leaders of tomorrow.

Thank you, Officer Tony, for your compassion, dedication, and commitment to the youth of our community. Your positive influence is making a lasting difference, and we are proud to have you serving our schools and representing the Chesterton Police Department.

To the moms serving in uniformโ€”thank you for balancing the call of duty with the call of motherhood. Your service inspires us all.๐Ÿฉท

From all of us at the Chesterton Police Department, we wish you a safe, joyful, and well-deserved day of appreciation.

As the weather gets nicer, we are seeing an increase in the use of e-bikes and e-scooters around town. Along with that increase have come questions and concerns regarding safety, operation, and where these devices are permitted to ride.

Indiana law classifies e-bikes into three categories (IC 9-21-11-13.1):

โ€ข Class 1 โ€“ Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
โ€ข Class 2 โ€“ Throttle-assisted, up to 20 mph
โ€ข Class 3 โ€“ Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph

Under Indiana law, Class 3 e-bikes are prohibited on bicycle and multi-purpose paths.

Electric scooters are also governed under Indiana law (IC 9-21-11-13.6) and riders have the same rights and responsibilities as bicyclists. Scooters operated at night must have a white front light and red rear light visible from at least 500 feet.

The Town of Chestertonโ€™s bicycle ordinance (Article V., Section 13) also applies to e-bikes and e-scooters. Riders should remember:

โ€ข Do not ride on sidewalks in business areas or in a way that interferes with pedestrians
โ€ข Park bicycles and scooters without obstructing sidewalks
โ€ข Obey all traffic laws, including stop signs, traffic signals, and yielding requirements

Additional Indiana law reminders:
โ€ข E-bikes are NOT considered motor vehicles
โ€ข Riders under 18 must wear a helmet
โ€ข Riders under 15 may NOT operate a Class 3 e-bike

We strongly encourage parents to speak with their children about the laws, rules, and most importantly safe and responsible riding practices before heading out around town.

๐Ÿšฒ KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER:
โœ” Class 3 e-bikes are NOT allowed on bike/multi-purpose paths
โœ” E-bikes and e-scooters must follow bicycle and traffic laws
โœ” Riders under 18 must wear a helmet
โœ” Ride responsibly and be respectful of pedestrians
