Fun Fact Friday! 🌊⚓

Did you know one of the most important moments in the exploration of the Chesapeake Bay happened right here in what is now Kent County, Maryland?

In August 1608, Captain John Smith sailed his small open boat up the Sassafras River during his second voyage to map the Chesapeake Bay. There, he encountered the Tockwogh people, who welcomed Smith and his crew with open arms.

Why such a warm reception? Just before arriving, Smith's crew had obtained shields and weapons from the Massawomecks, longtime enemies of the Tockwogh. Believing the English had defeated their rivals, the Tockwogh treated them as honored guests and welcomed them into their fortified village.

During his visit, Smith noticed the Tockwogh possessed metal tools. They explained these came through trade with the powerful Susquehannock people living farther north. Thanks to this connection, Smith was introduced to approximately 60 Susquehannock warriors, gaining valuable knowledge about the region.

The information shared by these Native communities played a major role in helping Captain John Smith create his remarkably accurate 1612 map of the Chesapeake Bay — a map that remains an important historical document over 400 years later.

📍 The next time you visit the beautiful Sassafras River, remember you're looking at waters that helped shape the history and exploration of the Chesapeake Bay.
