Maryland flags will be at half-staff today as the Honorable Joseph F. Murphy, Jr. (no relation) is laid to rest. As most in the legal universe are aware, Judge Murphy served on the Court of Appeals, was the Chief Judge of the Court of Special Appeals and was a judge in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County. As an interesting local note, Judge Murphy also periodically sat as a visiting judge here in Kent County during the summers. He loved it here and for many years he and his family had a house in Betterton. Judge Murphy was a magnificent judge... and an even better human being. God speed, Judge Joe.

Judge Joseph F. Murphy Jr., former chief judge of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals who ended his judicial career in 2011 as a judge on the state Court of Appeals, died of cancer Wednesday at Stella Maris Hospice. The Cockeysville resident was 78.

NOTICE REGARDING COVID POLICY:
The Maryland Judicial Brach's COVID-19 emergency period will end at midnight on April 3, 2022. We have been fortunate here in Kent County to have had the courts continue to operate throughout the pandemic with only limited restrictions. As of April 4, 2022, full, normal operations will resume, pending potential future orders of the Chief Judge of the State of Maryland or the Administrative Judges of the local courts.
