John LaFerla for Congress John LaFerla is a candidate for Congress in Maryland's 1st District. He's working to create high quality jobs, affordable healthcare, and a healthier Bay.

John is a resident of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where he has practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for more than a decade. His home is in Kent County and his private office is in Queen Anne’s County. He also sees patients at Federally funded clinics in Caroline county and practices Public Health in Talbot. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and then Albany Medical Colleg

e, receiving his MD in 1972. Later in his career he attended the University of Michigan School of Public Health, earning a Master’s in 1988. Before settling into private practice here in Maryland he practiced, taught in medical schools, and worked in an HMO in the Midwest. A life-long Democrat, John was an early supporter of the late Senator Paul Wellstone (Minnesota). In Maryland he has been President of the Kent County Democratic Club and has served as Chair of the Kent County Democratic Central Committee. He has been a hard-working supporter of Democratic candidates in local, state, and national elections and was prepared to support Frank Kratovil to regain his former seat in Congress. When redistricting results dissuaded Frank from running, John stepped into the breach and is now a candidate for Representative to U.S. Congress from Maryland’s First District. John’s organizational experiences include having served as President of his local congregation, the Unitarian-Universalists of the Chester River. For several years he was Treasurer of the Kent County Medical Society. In the past he has been assistant editor of a medical journal and also has been President of the American Society for Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1972 he was President of the student body at Albany Medical College and recently has been the Chief of Surgery for Chester River Hospital. He currently serves on the Public Health and Legislative committees of the Maryland State Medical Society. John donates time, skills, and/or money to a wide variety of causes including Habitiat for Humanity, United Fund, Planned Parenthood, and Public Radio among others. He has twice travelled to South America to provide gynecologic surgery to poor women in rural Peru. He has served as chair of the Social Justice committee at his local church and has volunteered to help “Adopt-a-Highway” clean-up crews on the Eastern Shore. John is married and has 4 grown children, and a stepson currently in college. In the last few years he has been blessed with 2 beautiful grandchildren.

Friends-

Democratic voters of Maryland’s First District have chosen Bill Tilghman to carry our party’s banner into battle against Andy Harris in November. He has stated his intention to bring a new kind of centrist leadership to Congress, and I trust he will do just that.

It's not the outcome we hoped for, but together we'll move forward. I am humbled by everyone's support, trust, and hard work. I kicked off this campaign more than two years ago and you have been with me every step of the way, your energy and enthusiasm propelling the campaign forward.

We started this campaign because we share a vision for District One and that hasn't changed. It's a vision of prosperity and progress for all, not just a few. We never lost sight of that vision and ran a true people-powered, grassroots campaign. We may have come up short, but we did impact change. We changed the conversation from ideology and partisanship to real people and real solutions. That change must not stop here.

This campaign has never been about me. It's always been about the people of the first district and ensuring we have a voice in Congress. This is why I hope you'll all join me in supporting our Democratic Nominee for Congress, Bill Tilghman.

Together, we'll remind Congress that it's still the people's house.

Had a very productive time on the upper shore today. I was honored to be welcomed at three churches this morning. I met great people. This was a lovely, faith-filled respite during a hectic and busy campaign.

Then Team LaFerla headed to the grand opening of Jesse Bane's Headquarters. He is running for reelection as Harford County Sheriff.

I saw a lot of friends at the event. Good eating too.

At mid-afternoon, the busy day was far from over. We canvassed many neighborhoods in Fallston.

Tomorrow, the team and I are knocking on doors in Bel Air. Join us.
