Last evening, the Bethel Park Police Department responded to a very unfortunate, but preventable, accident in the Boxer Heights neighborhood involving a juvenile operating an e-bicycle.

Based on our investigation, the juvenile, along with a friend operating an e-moto, was traveling at a high rate of speed and disregarding traffic laws. As both approached an intersection, they failed to stop at a stop sign. The juvenile on the e-bike entered the intersection and struck the side of a vehicle that had the right-of-way and no stop sign. The juvenile was transported by medics to an area hospital for (thankfully) minor injuries. The vehicle involved sustained significant damage.

Parents need to understand what these devices are capable of and ensure their children are using them responsibly and legally. Operators must be 16 years of age or older if they are riding outside of private property. Not only can parents and guardians be cited for permitting underage children to ride these devices, but they may also be held civilly liable for any damage or injuries caused as a result of reckless or unlawful operation.

Even if they are old enough to ride, operators still must obey traffic control devices, signs, and signals. These are also citable offenses.

Just a reminder, if you approach an intersection that is regulated by a traffic light and the traffic light is inoperative (dead light). You must treat it as a stop sign in all directions. Our officers have seen numerous violations and close calls of accidents over the past few days. You could receive a state citation for this violation or worse- cause an accident.

Recently 3 of our residents have fallen victim to a fraud scheme involving bitcoin totalling over $25,000. Each incident involved someone claiming to be from the sheriff's department or the court house. The scammer will tell the victim that they missed a court hearing or a family member has been arrested. The scammer tells the victim that they need to deposit X amount of dollars into a bitcoin machine to take care of the matter.

We want the word to get out that NO government agency or reputable business will require someone to use bitcoin to take care of a problem or request someone to purchase gift cards and give them the card numbers. If you receive any type of phone call like this and your are unsure of its validity please call your local police department before giving any money in any form. Officers are more than happy in helping people not become a victim.

We are also asking our younger facebook friends to check in with their older family members and inform them of the current SCAMS occuring.

We would like to give a big high five to the volunteers from Allegheny Valley and Blawnox Fire Departments for the assist in the rescue of the pomeranian known as 'BAM-BAM", who in a bid for excitement in his life made a mad dash across the ice on the river to 12 mile island. Thanks guys.

Today was our annual "Shop with a Cop" program at the Harmar Township Target Store. Officers from Harmar Township, Springdale Borough, Allegheny Valley School District and Allegheny Valley Regional participated. As usual the officers had a blast with the children.

We would like to thank State Representative Mandy Steele, The Target Corp, Dynamo Education Foundation and the Springdale Veterans Association for their generous donation to help fund the program.

We would like to give a big thank you to the staff of the Harmar Twp. Target Store and we can not forget Jan and Melissa from the Allegheny Valley School District. Each year they go out of their way to make the program run smooth.

Just our friendly annual reminder. PLEASE, PLEASE with all the cherries we can find on top. LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS. Sometime overnight in the acmetonia section of town vehicles were entered and items were stolen. All vehicles were left unlocked. This happened in neighboring communities as well. Don't make it easy for them!
