Congratulations to the athletes of Special Olympics Maryland who competed at the Outdoor Bocce State Championship! 🏆

Cpl. Becker had the honor of presenting awards to Interscholastic Unified Sport teams from high schools across Maryland, made up of both student-athletes and their partners. We are proud to support these incredible competitors and celebrate their teamwork and dedication both on and off the court.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit charged a son with murdering his mother on Tuesday. The suspect is 54-year-old Darrick Alston of Cheverly. He’s charged with fatally stabbing 80-year-old Brenda Wheeler of Cheverly.

On May 12, 2026, at approximately 9:10 am, officers with the Cheverly Police Department were called to a domestic dispute inside of a home in the 6200 block of Monroe Street in the town of Cheverly. The officers located the victim inside suffering from stab wounds. She died at the scene. Officers took her son into custody at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed Alston stabbed his mother during an argument. He is charged with first and second degree murder. He is in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.

The Prince George’s County Police Department investigates all homicides that occur in the town of Cheverly
