Affordable. Reliable. Essential. 🪨

Did you know that Wyoming leads the nation in coal production, supplying about 40% of all U.S. coal.

According to our 2026 Coal Study, the state produced 237.3 million tons in 2023, making it a critical source of reliable energy for power generation and industry.

Wyoming coal remains the lowest-cost in the nation, averaging $15.24 per ton compared to the U.S. average of $54.04.

CREPC brings together energy office officials and utility regulators from Western states and Canadian provinces to address electric power system policy issues requiring regional cooperation. We are excited to welcome Tylynn Hall as the new Director of Fossil Fuel Development at WEA. She brings valuable experience as a Wells Engineer and Project Engineer in Shell’s New Business Development, and has overseen the construction of a uranium ISR facility in Wyoming. Tylynn holds a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Wyoming and is a member of the University’s Energy Advisory Board. We look forward to her future contributions to the team.

WEA Deputy Director Kyle Wendtland testified before the Bureau of Land Management in Casper yesterday on the need to modernize the federal coal leasing program.

Kyle emphasized that Wyoming’s federal coal reserves remain essential to reliable, affordable baseload energy for both the state and the nation. His testimony called for a fair, transparent, and timely leasing system that reflects today’s coal markets, supports responsible development, and protects the public interest.

He also highlighted key reforms, including modernizing Fair Market Value calculations, extending bonus bid payment terms, improving BLM staffing, streamlining approvals, updating Logical Mining Unit requirements, expanding lease modification tools, and eliminating unnecessary federal transaction fees.

With Wyoming producing a major share of the nation’s coal, policy stability matters. A modern federal leasing program is critical to energy security, affordability, investment, and the long-term strength of Wyoming’s coal communities.

The Wyoming Energy Authority's RFP for a statewide Electricity Transmission Study is still open, with proposals due August 9, 2026.

Required under SF0102, Enrolled Act No. 50, passed by the Wyoming Legislature in 2026, the study will evaluate Wyoming's existing electric transmission system and identify strategic opportunities for future transmission development. Findings will help inform long-term infrastructure planning, future load growth, economic development, reliable energy delivery and transmission needs across the state.

Welcome, Brandi O’Brien, Nuclear and Critical Minerals Industry Coordinator

We are thrilled to welcome Brandi O’Brien as the Nuclear and Critical Minerals Industry Coordinator for the WEA. She previously served as the Administrator of the Land Quality Division (LQD) at the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ). She also spent nine years working within the LQD’s Source Material and Uranium Recovery Program as Program Manager, regulating uranium mines and mills in Wyoming, and four years in the Air Quality Division. Brandi holds a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering and has a research background, having spent three years as a fellowship student at Idaho National Laboratory, focusing on uranium nitride fuel development.
