KNOW MORE: Over 90% of sexual assault victims on college campuses do not report their assault.

There are many reasons why survivors don’t report. They may be scared. They may not know where to turn. They may not want to be re-traumatized by having to tell their story. They may not think they will be believed.

NO MORE is working to create a culture in which survivors feel safe and empowered to speak up. If you or a loved one has been affected by sexual violence, know that you are not alone. Find support by visiting the NO MORE Global Directory at nomoredirectory.org or calling 800-656-HOPE to speak to someone at the National Sexual Assault Hotline.

Military Sexual Trauma (MST) refers to sexual assault or threatening sexual harassment experienced during military service. MST includes any sexual activity that happened against your will or without your consent. MST can have long-term mental and physical health consequences and readjustment challenges for some Veterans.

Did you know? The identity or characteristics of the perpetrator, whether you were on or off duty at the time, and whether you were on or off base at the time do not matter.

National data from this program reveal that about 1 in 3 women and 1 in 50 men respond “yes,” that they experienced MST, when screened by their VA provider. Although rates of MST are higher among women, because there are so many more men than women in the military, there are significant numbers of women and men seen in VA who have experienced MST.

For more information, Veterans can speak with their existing VA health care provider, contact the MST Coordinator at their nearest VA medical center, or contact their local Vet Center. A list of VA and Vet Center facilities can be found at https://www.va.gov/find-locations/ Veterans should feel free to ask to meet with a clinician of a particular gender if it would make them feel more comfortable.

Veterans can also learn more about VA’s MST-related services online at https://www.va.gov/health-care/health-needs-conditions/military-sexual-trauma/ and see video clips with the recovery stories of Veterans who have experienced MST at https://www.maketheconnection.net/conditions/military-sexual-trauma/
