Hey Conservation Friends!

I have dug and dug through forecasts and weather predictions and all I can tell you is what you already know. Wyoming is going to do what Wyoming wants to, regardless of what the computers, statistics, well-educated folks and grandpa's old knee tells you. Could it be mild? Maybe. Windy? Well yeah. Snowy? Maybe? Rainy? Maybe. Dry? Maybe. Windy...without a doubt. Yes, I said windy twice, but cause, well, wind. What we know is this: Warmer winter days comes winter watering, and sometimes, you can catch that "snow" (if you can keep it out of Nebraska), and use if for the moisture we need so badly. If you have questions about snow fences or winter watering, give us a holler! We would love to talk to you about it!

And yes, folks, I know it is in the 80's today and in the high 90's for my dad, in NC, so I am just wishful thinking!!!

Hello Conservation Friends!

So, with election season well underway, we all have been inundated with advertisements, campaign signs, and commercials about who is running and why. The Laramie County Conservation District has a stake in this years election because we have spots up for election! Unlike the other campaigns, our folks don't always go out and do the stumping thing...yes, that's a word, I looked it up!

Regardless, we thought we could help you out by asking the candidates to tell us why they wanted to be part of our board! Some have answered, some not as of yet, but EVERYONE gets equal space and time on our website! You can go to LCCDNET.ORG and click the button on the front page and find out who the candidates are and what they stand for conservation-wise.

Yes, it's only August, but November will be here soon. Keep checking back for more updates and information as it comes in.

Hey Conservation Friends!

Do you grow stuff? You know, things like cucumbers, corn, sorghum, wheat, native grasses, tomatoes? Are you the one that knows what NPK stands for but never really does anything to see if you have the proper ratio? Well, here's your chance!!! LCCD's resident Resource Specialist and Soil Scientist, Rachel, has a new program to help your soil stay in balance! This is a new cost-share program, where we visit with you, collect a composite sample of soil for you and help you fill out the paperwork. Then the District will pay up to 50% of the test fee! When the results come back, Rachel will go over the results and make recommendations of what you can do to improve your soil quality.

Hey Conservation Friends!
As I was always told in the Navy, keep your head on a swivel and be prepared! We need the moisture but we need to be prepared for the other stuff like lightening and hail as well. Be safe out there and cross your fingers for rain!!!

Good morning, Conservation Friends!

Myself and our Resource Technician were at the Cheyenne Botanical Gardens yesterday studying native seed planting. Thanks to Isaiah Smith, Horticulture Operations Supervisor, we learned that Milkweed is great to grow here but it is not necessarily for the Monarchs! He advised we are not in either of the Monarch migration paths and if we see them, the Milkweed is either not flowering or has already flowered and gone.
Don't be discouraged though! Milkweed is still a great pollinator plant to grow in our area and does well.

Hey Conservation Friends!
New trees need water! But, old tree friends do too! It is often a misconnection that because a tree is older and more established, say more than 3 years old or greater than 10 ft, they don't need to be watered. Unfortunately, with our on-going drought, there is no moisture left in the ground for those established trees to utilize. Rule of thumb, 10 gallons per 1" of tree trunk. It's a lot, but we have to help them out just like they help us by giving shade!!!

We have a new Education Program that we want to share with Laramie County! Are you a Homeschooler? Are you a Boy Scout or Girl Scout? Do you belong to 4-H or FFA? Are you a Middle School teacher with one of our school Districts here in Laramie County?
