"Every citizen equal before the law." — Wyoming Republican Party Platform, Plank II

A principle Wyoming has upheld since 1869, when the Wyoming Territorial Legislature became the first government in the world to grant women the right to vote and hold public office.

One year later, Esther Hobart Morris was appointed Justice of the Peace in South Pass City, the first woman in America to hold public office.

When Congress threatened to block Wyoming's statehood in 1890 unless women's suffrage was stripped from the constitution, Wyoming's answer was famous:

"We will remain out of the Union 100 years rather than come in without the women."

Today, we honor Wyoming's legacy as The Equality State.
