Featuring archaeologist and cultural resource specialist Nathan May, the event will take place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Wyoming State Museum classroom.

Join the Wyoming State Archives Speaker Series on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. for "Branding Irons & Cattle Barons: The Heraldry of the Grasslands," a free presentation by historian Evan Green.

This talk explores how simple branding irons became the ultimate symbols of wealth, ownership, and law on the open range, ultimately shaping the economic foundation of the American West. Green, a fi****ms historian at the Wyoming State Museum with a deep background in Western traditions, will share how these livestock marks forged the identity of modern Wyoming.

If you're planning to celebrate America's 250th with us this weekend, don't miss your chance to see what goes on behind closed doors at the archives. We are hosting quick, exclusive tours of our spaces this Saturday, July 4th!

⏱️ Tour Times: 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM, and 4:00 PM
⏳ Duration: These are short and sweet—just 10 to 15 minutes long!
👥 Group Size: Limited to 10–15 people per group.

Tours are completely first-come, first-served. When you arrive, just look for the "Tour Meets Here" sign to line up for your spot!

As a reminder, our exhibits are open this Saturday from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Come explore Wyoming’s history and catch a tour while you're here!

We'll be open for your holiday weekend!

If you have been wanting to visit the archives, this long weekend is a great time to come see us. Please note our specific schedule for research, exhibit viewing, and tours:

Friday, July 3rd (Research Room Only): 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (The exhibit will not be open on this day while we put on the finishing touches).

Saturday, July 4th (Exhibit Viewing): 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM (Open for viewing the exhibit only).

Tour Details: We will also be hosting behind-the-scenes tours of our spaces on July 4th. These will be limited to 10–15 people per tour on a first-come, first-served basis. Specific tour times will be posted soon.

We look forward to celebrating America's 250th with you. Have a wonderful and safe holiday!

Join the Wyoming State Archives on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. for a free presentation by acclaimed historian Dr. Martha Sandweiss on her new book, Girl in the Middle: A Recovered History of the American West.

Dr. Sandweiss investigates an 1868 Fort Laramie treaty photograph, recovering the identity of Sophie Mousseau—the young Native girl at the center of the frame who remained anonymous for over a century while the powerful men around her were meticulously documented.
