The Wyoming State Museum was recently honored to host a world-renowned Japanese doll maker and conservator, Aoki Masaru, to repair damage to Miss Yamanashi, the museum's treasured Japanese friendship doll. Miss Yamanashi was sent to America in 1927 along with 57 other dolls that were distributed to other states. Aoki-san repaired cracks on the doll's hands, legs, and face using the same techniques and materials used by the doll's original makers. These dolls will turn 100 years old in 2027 and will gather for the first time together again next year at an exhibit in Virginia. We will keep you posted on that big event!

This Day in Wyoming History…

On May 19, 1869, the organization of the Wyoming Territory was officially finalized as territorial officers completed their oaths of office.

The Territory of Wyoming had been created the previous year through the Organic Act of July 25, 1868. President Ulysses S. Grant appointed John A. Campbell to serve as Wyoming’s first territorial governor, with Congress approving the appointment in April 1869.

On the same day the territorial government was formally organized, Governor Campbell issued a proclamation establishing a temporary Territorial Seal for Wyoming. The Territorial Legislature later adopted an updated version of the seal on December 9, 1869. That seal remained in use throughout the territorial era until Wyoming became a state in 1890. In 1893, the Second State Legislature officially adopted the Great Seal of the State of Wyoming still recognized today.

Featured here are a portrait of Governor Campbell and artifacts bearing the Territorial Seal — reminders of Wyoming’s earliest steps toward statehood.

Boeing Air Transport began training the world’s first airline stewardesses in May, 1930 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The airline later became United Airlines and ran a stewardess training school here from 1947-1961. The Museum recently received donations of uniforms from some of the women who were trained there and worked their entire careers with United. Please enjoy this blue jacket from 1965, orange dress from 1970, and Hawaiian print dress from the 1980s.

More changes are coming as we continue to prepare for our new "People & Passages" exhibit!

Mid-May will be your last chance to see two of our key exhibits: "Drawn to this Land: Animal Resources" and the "Earl Newell Folk Art Collection."

If these are some of your favorite topics, like the importance of barbed wire or the Johnson County War — don't worry! These topics, and more, will be featured in the new exhibit opening in July.

Family Day wrapped up its 2025/2026 season with another great event! With help from Rooted in Cheyenne, LCCC, and Wyoming State Parks, kids learned about the water cycle, water ph, and the importance of trees in our city. Our friends from Texas Roadhouse stopped by to hand out fun prizes and our amazing volunteers helped kids learn about beaver dams, create arts and crafts, and paint using water guns!

We hope everyone enjoys their summer and we'll see you in Laramie at the Archaeology Fair in September!
