Take a minute to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re working properly. If your alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them!

This year fire prevention week is focused on🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety.

* Use the right charger: Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
* Charge on a hard surface: Never charge batteries on beds, couches, or under pillows.
* Unplug when fully charged: Don’t leave devices charging unattended or overnight.
* Keep exits clear: Charge e-bikes, scooters, and other large battery-powered devices away from doors and escape routes.
* Know the warning signs: Stop using a battery if it becomes hot, swells, changes shape, smells unusual, makes noises, or smokes.
* Recycle safely: Never put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling. Take them to an approved battery recycling location.

✈️ Traveling With Batteries

* Keep batteries where you can see them when flying.

🚒🔥 Welcome to Fire Prevention Month! 🔥🚒

Throughout October, the Chicago Heights Fire Department will be sharing a variety of important fire safety tips to help keep you and your family safe.

🏠 Our first tip: Check and test your smoke detectors!

Make sure you have working smoke detectors on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.

🔔 How to test your smoke detector:
• Press and hold the TEST button until you hear the alarm sound.
• Make sure the alarm is loud enough to be heard throughout your home.
• If it doesn’t sound, replace the batteries and test it again.
• If it still doesn’t work, replace the smoke detector.

🚨 A working smoke detector provides the early warning you need to get your family safely out of the home during a fire.

Stay tuned all month for more fire safety tips from the Chicago Heights Fire Department!

Last week’s training focused on water rescue operations. 🌊🚒

Water rescue training is essential for preparing our crews to respond safely and effectively when someone is in distress in or around water. Crews practiced the skills, equipment, and techniques needed to quickly locate, reach, and rescue victims while maintaining firefighter safety throughout the operation.

Continuous training helps ensure our members are prepared when seconds matter.
