Thanks for sharing, Chair State Representative Michael J. Zalewski! Illinois is ready to be a home for cryptocurrency and I'm excited to help make that happen.

Crypto. Blockchain. In public policy, and in general, those words and concepts make people nervous. They’re new and hard to explain, which necessarily means people see “caution ahead” when reading about them.

But, blockchain technology has huge potential for government. It actually can make large repositories of information *more secure.*. It can help bridge the financial gap for underbanked communities. And that’s just the start. My colleague Margaret Croke has picked up this ball and ran with it in the 102nd GA. Illinois can and should and should be a leader in the digital asset landscape.

On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the flag of the United States, representing the dream of creating a more perfect union. This Flag Day, let's remember that we all share that goal and must continue to work together to achieve it.

LGBTQ couples would get fertility coverage under Illinois bill headed to governor’s desk. ‘Yes, you can become a parent.’

Thank you to the Chicago Tribune for writing about my bill to expand fertility treatment coverage to the LGBTQ+ community, single parents, and others who want to start or grow their family, and thank you to the Illinoisans who shared their stories for this piece.

As Keva Coates said, “Having this relief and this bill pass will finally give the LGBTQ community a yes — yes you can become a parent.” I am so proud to have led this legislation, and look forward to seeing it signed into law.

A bill that recently passed both houses of the state legislature would require many health insurance companies in Illinois to extend fertility coverage to LGBTQ people, single people and women with certain health issues.

After Years Of Mockery, Illinois Is Finally Earning High Marks Over Its Finances

“Illinois was one of the first [states] that we put on negative outlook. This year, they’re one of the first that we took off the negative outlook,” said S&P credit analyst Geoffrey Buswick.

“There were a lot of things that we saw even before the budget was passed that we thought were warranting the change to stable. And now with this budget passed, we do see it as gaining closer to true budget balance,” he said.

Is Illinois’ moment of financial stability a blip, destined to fade in a year or two? Experts and lawmakers weigh in.

The end of the legislative session means I get more time to meet with people all around IL-12. Today, I toured Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy Chicago and got to see how they've adjusted for in-person teaching during COVID. 📚 My office also met with the Community Policing Team at the 19th District Chicago Police Department to hear more about their community engagement work.

Today we broke ground on the AIDS Memorial Garden in Belmont Harbor - to echo 44th Alderman's Office- Tom Tunney, it's a bright day in Chicago for the LGBTQIA+ community. 🏳️‍🌈 This #Pride Month, I look forward to celebrating the hard-fought victories against HIV/AIDS but also honoring the many loved ones lost and the countless still struggling. We still have way more work to do for LGBTQIA+ rights and dignity but we’ve laid some great ‘groundwork’ already.

Illinois legislators approve bill that would decriminalize HIV transmission

“Laws that criminalize HIV are outdated, dangerous, discriminatory, and out of line with current science,” - Senator Robert Peters. Removing criminal charges against HIV is a very important step to destigmatizing HIV and getting rid of shame and other barriers that often keep people from getting treatment.

A bill that remove the possibility of criminal penalties for transmitting the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, was passed by the Illinois Senate on Tuesday.

Whether it’s a four-year university or a community college, every student should be able to access an education. I supported a measure to allow community colleges and housing development authorities to work together to develop affordable housing for students, making it easier for students with limited financial means to pursue higher education.

We can all agree that getting guns out of the wrong hands is a priority. That’s why I supported legislation that strengthens Illinois’ red flag laws, known as firearm restraining orders (FRO), and allow more family members to petition the court to remove guns and ammunition from individuals who pose a threat to others or themselves. This is another tool in the toolbox to help reduce gun violence.
