Next business we are highlighting for AAPI Heritage month is KGBakes LLC, www.KGBakes.com!

KGBakes’ pies are created by Karrel G. Bernardo whose objective, at first, was to eat once more one of his favorite desserts growing up in the Philippines – buko pie or young coconut pie but could not find any to his liking that he decided to try and make it himself since he had a lot of pandemic lockdown time.

After so many trials and errors he was able to finally come-up with his own version that his family and friends liked that they started ordering as gifts for special occasion until he decided to make it a small scale home-based business. What started as a craving is now a passion to share to a bigger audience of what this ”buko pie” is all about and creating other Filipino pie delicacies that aims to “satis-pie” everyone.

How CMAA helped according to Karrel: "Tommy from CMAA at Illinois SBDC was very easy to work with from the moment I reached out for help with my new small business. CMAA helped me connect with the business experts in the community to network for guidance and exposure. Bottomline, without the CMAA, I would still be lost and wont know how to navigate the complicated business world."

During AAPI Month, CMAA will be giving a shoutout to some of our Asian owned businesses that we have worked with at our Illinois Small Business Development Center at CMAA this year.

Next up is BHOP Esports owned by Joseph Ho! In addition to having fun playing video-games together, BHOP ESPORTS is an Esports Center that aims to help those who are pursuing their academic and professional goals through the trending platform of Esports, but maybe don't have access to the proper training, resources, or high-performance equipment to do so.

Through an online search, Joseph discovered the advisors at the Illinois SBDC at CMAA, the only Asian American SBDC in Illinois. He quickly realized the fear of venturing out alone dissipated with every meeting he had with his business advisors. The fact that services are no cost helped him sleep at night. Joseph says the immense progress made on his business can be attributed to the Illinois SBDC at CMAA and its work in helping fellow Asian American entrepreneurs.

BHOP Esports is proud to announce its Grand Opening Day this summer on June 19, 2021 with a soft opening date on June 16! Check it out! www.bhopesports.com

During AAPI Month, CMAA will be giving a shoutout to some of our Asian owned businesses that we have worked with at our Illinois Small Business Development Center at CMAA this year.

First up is Blink & Polish Nails Waxing in East Lakeview! Blink & Polish provides nail care services, waxing and facial services. The business is comprised of skilled and experienced technicians who aim at providing you the best experience.

Blink & Polish received help from Illinois SBDC at CMAA: Business Advisor Thomas Choi helped the owner with some legal issues that the business had with their building. SBDC paid for the legal fees through the Cares Act Supplemental Funding, as they owner did not have the funding to pay for the costs. The Illinois SBDC at CMAA also guided the owner through the Payroll Protection Program second round loan.

These things have helped Blink & Polish stay open throughout the pandemic! Please take the time to check out this amazing business and support your local AAPI community!

Hello everyone! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ 🔸A University of Illinois COVID response initiative, Covalence, has just launched a facebook event that we highly encourage you to join if you'd like to join us in helping our communities amidst COVID-19. (for more info on Covalence visit covalence-uiuc.org) 🔹COVID Relief Service Sprints are short term (1-2 weeks) volunteering initiatives where we encourage our friends and families to take action by tackling a key COVID-related issue in their communities each time through an act of service. 🔹Volunteering may not be the most glamorous endeavor, but it IS an effective way for us to make tangible and direct contributions to a pressing need. What makes these Service Sprints unique is that every 1-2 weeks we will have a different theme (food insecurity, elderly loneliness, etc.) to encourage participants to get involved in different areas of service and learn how they can best serve their communities! 📢Request: Please RSVP to our Service Sprints Facebook Event to volunteer with us and to learn about how other participants across the US are contributing in their own ways! We urge you to take the initiative and encourage your friends and family to join as well so we can make a real difference through our combined efforts.
