Pritzker at Lambda Legal’s Bon Foster Civil Rights Celebration in the Old Chicago Main Post Office. Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest national legal organization, whose mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of le****ns, gay men, bisexual and transgender people, and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy. The Human Rights Commission's, Administrative Law Judge Azeema N. Akram co-moderated a MCLE program for the DuPage County Bar Association’s Business Law and Practice Section on April 12, 2022. The program was titled “Is Disability a Part of Diversity? Attorneys With Disabilities Respond,” and was co-moderated by Commissioner Rachel M. Arfa (City of Chicago, Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities). Panelists included: Mary Rosenberg (Senior Attorney, Access Living of Metro Chicago), Andrés Gallegos (Shareholder, Robbins Dimonte), and Andrew Webb (Staff Attorney, Equip for Equality), who discussed how disability is a part of our nation-wide conversation on diversity, equity and inclusion. The event received positive feedback on how the presenters shared first-hand experience on working in the legal field with a disability and insights on making the practice of law more accessible.

Please see this important update from our colleagues at Illinois Department of Human Rights about the continued evolution of the Illinois Human Rights Act.

Thank you to Governor JB Pritzker for signing HB2775 that bans discrimination in housing selection based on source of income, incl. Section 8 vouchers, disability payments, child support, and other non-employment income. “Refusing to rent to a housing applicant because of their source of income disproportionately affects renters of color, women, and persons with disabilities,” said Illinois Department of Human Rights Director Jim Bennett. “Through the hard work of dedicated housing rights advocates along with our housing team at the Illinois Department of Human Rights, HB2775 ensures that a single parent in Quincy, a veteran in Murphysboro, or a retiree in East Peoria can now seek affordable housing without fear that their lawful source of income will be rejected.”

From our colleagues at Illinois Department of Human Rights

The Illinois Human Rights Act continues to evolve and grow to bring more protection to the people of Illinois. Today, Governor JB Pritzker signed HB4605 that amends an essential provision of the Real Estate Transactions (Housing) Article of the Illinois Human Rights Act (“IHRA”). The bill ensures that parties to housing discrimination cases may choose to have their case heard by a jury. This amendment ensures that Illinoisans, whether complainant or respondent, have the same rights, obligations and protections available to them under Illinois law as they enjoy under Federal law.
