Lincoln Park Conservatory

Lincoln Park Conservatory Based on the design of architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee, this beautiful Victorian glass house was built

Owned and operated by the Chicago Park District, the Lincoln Park Conservatory is a beautiful marriage of glass and iron constructed between 1890 and 1895. The structure is divided into four houses featuring palms, ferns, orchids, and various seasonal displays for spring, summer, and the winter holidays. No matter the time of year, however, visitors can feast both eyes and noses alike on a vast a

rray of fruits and blooms representing all corners of the globe. It is a wonderfully warm and inviting space to bring out-of-towners or to just sit and read a book in the dead months of winter. It is, after all, always 75 degrees here at Lincoln Park Conservatory.

Save The Dates:
This year, enjoy the decadent setting of “Champagne Toast,” the 2024 Winter Flower Show at the Lincoln Park Conservatory. The display features poinsettia varieties such as ‘Autumn Leaves’, ‘Jubilee Pink’, ‘Ice Crystal’, and ‘Maren’, all of which capture the theme in unique shades of apricot, gold and pink. Fresh cut fir trees adorn the room and hanging baskets of dichondra float like chandeliers.

Pellionia repens commonly known as Trailing Watermelon Begonia has a strange way of releasing pollen. When temperature changes (like during watering) and the pollen sacks are full and mature, they release pollen which looks like smoke. Sometimes it goes off with a pop sound. We captured it in this video.

"The World Doubles in Size"

Following a summer spent in Chicago, “The World Doubles in Size” is a piece compiled of field recordings taken all around the city- documenting a summer spent at home. The sounds of the Chicago river, summer storms, conversations, cicadas, violin, and voice, are all featured throughout the piece in varying levels of processing. This bed of recordings creates a soundscape in which nature and the sounds of the city can be improvised alongside- a collaborator that is always present. Loosely inspired by the Mary Oliver poem, “Hurricane”, from the compilation, “A Thousand Mornings”, the piece plays with comparing the shifting of the seasons with the ever-evolving nature of the self.

This piece is dedicated to Gladys - The fish in the Lincoln Park Conservatory Fern Room Pond.

This Show will run from Sunday, September 22nd through Sunday, November 24th.

Barringtonia racemosa commonly known as Powder-Puff Tree (because of those puffy inflorescences no doubt). Plant common names can be confusing, and this is an example of them. Calliandra haematocephala is also called Powder-Puff Tree and both of these are in the same display house-Palm House.
In order to clear doubts, we have our plants labeled in both common names and scientific names. Read the labels and familiarize yourself when visiting.

Our Vanilla vine started flowering, this morning we quickly had to get the open flowers pollinated. Vanilla is not autogamous (It cannot self-pollinate) so we have to pollinate it by hand, and it has to be as soon as possible since the flower opens, otherwise it will not be viable. In a couple of weeks, we will start see the "Beans" developing.
