In Texas, a high-profile custody dispute has become the opening anti-abortion groups wanted for a new level of control. State Rep. Tom Oliverson posted on X that he will prioritize legislation "coming after" surrogacy when the legislature reconvenes in 2027. The group backing him, Texas Right to Life, is the same one behind some of Texas's most sweeping abortion bans, and it's already talking with lawmakers about what an anti-surrogacy bill could look like.

These are the ripples we see when lawmakers succeed at policing people's bodies. A narrower, less familiar target builds the case for a bigger one, and by the time people notice, the ripple has already reached something they assumed was untouchable. It happened with abortion pills. It happened with shield laws. Now it's happening with the fertility treatments millions of families rely on to have children at all.

Statehouses are where each of these fights gets decided, one legislative session at a time. That's exactly where Project 50 invests: in the leaders who can stop these bills before they become law.

A federal judge in Idaho just issued the first ruling since Dobbs to find that the Constitution protects abortion access in certain situations. Judge B. Lynn Winmill ruled that a pregnant person has a right to an abortion when the pregnancy threatens their physical or mental health, and blocked Idaho's near total ban from applying in those cases.

Of the 13 states with near total abortion bans, five have no exception for a patient's health at all. The rest rely on a "life" exception so vague that doctors are left guessing whether saving a patient will cost them their license.

One judge just said what’s been obvious all along: a woman's health is not up for debate. Now it's on the rest of us to make that true everywhere.

A Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School study found an increase in anxiety and depression symptoms in states that banned abortion after Roe fell, especially among women ages 18 to 45. Some of those women weren't even pregnant. Researchers say just knowing that right could disappear overnight is enough to shake a person's sense of security.

This isn't only about people denied care in the moment. It's about what it does to everyone living under these laws, every single day.

Bills to prosecute abortion patients for homicide jumped 367% in two years.

According to a new report from Pregnancy Justice, just three bills like this were introduced in the 2023-2024 legislative session. In 2026, that number hit 14.

It's a reminder of what this fight has always been about. Not protecting life but controlling women's bodies.

Big wins for abortion rights in Missouri last week.

Voters overwhelmingly rejected Amendment 4, the legislature's attempt to gut the citizen initiative process. And two abortion rights champions, Gina Mitten and Tori Schafer, won their primaries outright.

Our Missouri partner, Access MO - Access for all Missourians, helped make it happen. Endorsements, canvassing, postcard parties, and volunteers at the polls all summer long.

This is what state by state organizing looks like. Access MO is already gearing up for November, ready to break the anti-abortion supermajority and defeat another abortion ban.

The Center for Reproductive Rights published The Post-Roe Reality: By the Numbers in June.

Nearly 63 million women and girls now live under a state abortion ban.

Mothers in those states are nearly twice as likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or shortly after giving birth as mothers in states where abortion is legal and accessible. In Louisiana, three times as likely. For Black mothers in banned states, the rate is more than three times that of White mothers in the same states.

This is who lives and who does not, decided by which state you happen to be in.
