We’ve been thinking a lot about International Women’s Day, seeing all of the posts coming in. And as an organization run by women, staffed by women, we’ve spent today seeing how many organizations in disinvested communities are also run and staffed by women; especially women of color. They are our collaborators, our extended family and those we can always depend on to do best for our communities. They’re also often overlooked, under-appreciated and rarely celebrated. What does that have to do with @bisabutler? Her exhibit at the @artinstitutechi shows the overlooked and unnamed women of color in all of their splendor, with all the complexity, grit and love that we see everyday. Here’s to the women who make things happen, who deserve more and ask for nothing. We see you, we love you, we appreciate you.

This beautiful piece of art has been a long time coming and is a labor of love from @wonder_city_studio It’s a big, gorgeous Valentine to the South Side inspired by one of her proudest sons, @leebey and his captivating book Southern Exposure. In January 2020 we had the pleasure of hearing Lee and @awstudioart in conversation with @eve.ewing as they discussed Race, Space and the Built Environment. We left inspired with thoughts racing and sat on the couch, staring at a Wonder City print of Chicago Home Styles and poring over Southern Exposure. Part of space, place and social justice is what gets celebrated, the areas that receive recognition. The recognition so often given to the South Side is notoriety. But there are brilliant and beautiful people (like Lee, Amanda and Eve) bringing positive attention, organizations like @englewoodartscollective and @tonikaj Folded Map and @chicago_public_art_group who work to change the narrative and beautify communities. What if there was something like what Phil creates, but focused on the South Side? Here’s the crazy part, Phil agreed and took on the Herculean task with enthusiasm, heart and care. He has cared so much about representing the pride that we all have for our communities. Thank you Phil, thank you to everyone doing the work. Now let’s beautify our homes with this work.

Small businesses are major job creators, Small businesses are innovators, Small businesses are economic drivers African-Americans are the fastest growing segment of the nation’s small business owners. African-American business ownership increased 60 percent during the economic expansion from 2002 to 2007, as compared to roughly 13 percent for white-owned firms during the same period. Approximately 1.9 million, or 7 percent, of the nation’s small businesses are African-American owned, including many of the independent shops, restaurants, and service providers that create jobs and economic opportunity in underserved communities across the country. The vast majority of African-American businesses are in African American communities, many of which lack access to basic goods and services such as healthy, affordable food stores. These businesses can help fill those gaps. Additionally, new jobs created by these businesses are usually filled by people from the neighborhood, creating important employment opportunities in communities struggling with high rates of unemployment or underemployment. African-American entrepreneurs frequently operate in a different business ecosystem than their counterparts from different races or ethnicities. Oftentimes their businesses are in low-income neighborhoods where there is a struggle to find safe, suitable business space and to contend with the skyrocketing rents associated with gentrification. Few friends and family members have enough disposable income to make loans. Mentors and professional networks that can provide guidance and support to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship are lacking. In short, the deck is stacked against African American entrepreneurs before they even begin to confront common challenges such as cash flow, market share, and product viability that small business owners of all races must face. As with any other niche market, such unique circumstances demand specialized resources tailored to the specific needs of African-American entrepreneurs. And yet even with all this African American business act as a social buffer in that the owners act as role models to young people and create social networks that serves to shield and divert youth from a life of crime by mitigating some of the economic factors that contribute to youth violence. Thus, African American businesses provide employment opportunities which in general improves neighborhoods. On Saturday March 23, 2019 at Olive Harvey College in room OH 1205 from 12 noon to 2 pm individuals and resources will be available to assist the establishment, marketing, funding and mentoring of those seeking to become a small business owner.
