SVA Illinois

SVA Illinois Our Vision: SVA-IL is the standard bearer in delivering best in class Veteran talent to the Nation. Today’s veterans face tremendous obstacles in their path of attaining a college degree.
(4)

These challenges range from a missing sense of camaraderie to a lack of understanding by university faculty and peers. When coupled with the visible and invisible wounds of war, a college degree seems to be an elusive goal for men and women returning from military service. Illinois Student Veterans of America (SVA) makes that goal a reality.

9/11 Day of Service

"Dear SVA Community,
The 20th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedies has become a National Day of Service, known as “9/11 Day.”

9/11 Day is a time when Americans are asked to join together in unity, remember those lost, and if possible, perform good deeds or other acts of service as a positive tribute to the 9/11 victims, as well as first responders and military personnel who rose in service in response to the attacks.

This year, SVA is contributing to 9/11 Day's goal to inspire Americans and others to perform 20 million good deeds in remembrance and tribute for the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

It’s easy to participate:
From September 1 through September 12, visit the SVA website to log your service hours.
Reach out to your local chapter to find ways to get involved.
Browse the outstanding service opportunities and “good deeds” you’ll find at 911day.org.
Pick an activity that inspires you or come up with your own good deed or charitable service projects for 9/11.

Then complete it and log your activity in the dashboard on our website.

Share your 9/11 good deed, or activity on social media. Include the hashtags #SVA911Day, and #911day.

Nothing could be more important today than joining together to devote time to helping those most in need.

Thank you!
SVA National Headquarters

Afghanistan: How Veterans can learn from Vietnam Veterans | VAntage Point

The department of Veteran Affairs is releasing a 4-part series on Afghanistan and how veterans and service members can receive help and assistance from the VA.

"The withdrawals are an experience that Afghanistan and Vietnam Veterans share. One of the ways Afghanistan and Vietnam Veterans come together is through Vet Centers. Vet Centers operate outside of the traditional medical model, where eligible Veterans, service members and their families can come together to find meaning in their service. Talking through these shared experiences helps, and there’s no time limit or additional cost for services."

The second part of this series focuses on how those who served in Afghanistan can learn from those who served in Vietnam.

What is #EmergencyAid? It’s financial assistance given to students to help them cover unexpected costs—car repairs, medical bills, unpaid institutional fees, & more—that may otherwise throw off their #HigherEd plans.

During the pandemic, emergency aid helped #TodaysStudents stay on track despite unexpected expenses, but student emergencies will continue post-pandemic. That's why Today’s Students Coalition is advocating for a permanent student emergency aid infrastructure!
