July is on my mind. Can you believe that it's July already?!

Here is what is happening in July at the center.

NOTE: There has been a change to the menu. On July 25th there will not be a boxed lunch to go for those not going to the party that day. Sorry for any inconvenience.

To anybody who is looking to donate to the senior center, we are presently in need of $5 gift cards for businesses and restaurants to use as BINGO prizes. We also use them as gifts for other games we may play.

We also accept larger denomination gift cards, gift baskets and new, unused items to use as raffle prizes.

Anything you are able to give will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The Garfield Ridge Satellite Senior Center is located at 5674 South Archer Avenue, Unit B, Chicago, IL 60638. We are open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. if you'd like to drop off your donation. If you would like to donate with a check please make it out to the organization that runs the center: Southwest Side Senior Service Organization (or SSSSO). Thanks!

The next fundraiser at the senior center is out. Consider joining us. It's fun and raises money for programming at the center.

It's an Olympic BINGO Party on the day of the opening of the Summer Olympics in Paris, Friday, July 26th!

By the way, you get two BINGO cards to play with your ticket purchase. Additional cards will be on sale for 50 cents each. You are not allowed to use free BINGO card tickets at this party.

Good afternoon. The senior center is looking for a volunteer, with book club experience, to run a book club at the center on a Thursday morning once or twice a month, 10:00-11:30 a.m.

This generous volunteer would need to fill out an application and be approved by the Southwest Regional Director from the Department of Family and Support Services before we could start up the club.

Also, Patti Tyznik from the Garfield Ridge Library said she would help us by ordering extra copies of each month's book for the book club participants.

Here's a sample of the terra cotta hanging pots that we are painting tomorrow. This is how I painted this one; you can paint yours however you'd like. Also pictured are the beautiful flowers that Soukal Floral & Greenhouses, Inc. donated (thank you!) for seniors to plant in these pots.

There's still space to come. There is a $2.00 fee to offset the cost of the pot and painting supplies. You can call until 4:15 p.m. today to reserve a spot, or come in tomorrow and take a chance on there being a spot left.

Painting starts at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.

On Wednesday, Chef Gloria Dattulo Hafer cooked a Burgoo in honor of the Kentucky Derby. She also had a Derby Hat Contest. Here are the "hats" that showed their roses.

UPDATED! Open House and Resource Fair on Thursday, May 30, 2024, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!

There will be hot dogs, chips, soda and water for those who attend and raffle prizes too!

May is Older Americans Month with the theme of "Power Through Connection". We have lots of things going on.

One important one is a FREE trip to the Passport to the World Senior Gala. This one is expected to be so popular that every center is taking names and then having a lottery to determine who gets to go. The trip is on Wednesday, May 15th and includes transportation to and from right from our senior center. Get on the list by 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 6th, because that is when we are pulling our lottery!

Also coming up this month is an Open House and Resource Fair at our center. It is Thursday, May 30th, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Check out the flyer for a list of everybody who will be here connecting with you. There will be food and beverages.

PLEASE NOTE: On May 15, 2024, there will be a boxed lunch instead of the regular hot lunch.

There's a trip available. It's the Passport to the World Senior Gala. This is a FREE trip, however, due to limited space there will be a lottery to determine who gets to attend. Sign up at the center now and we will pull our lottery on Monday, May 6th at 12:30 p.m. See the attached flyer and the Manager's notes on how the lottery will work. Get your name and number in before 12:30 p.m. on May 6th.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, it's free and there will transportation from the center to the event and back to the center.

May is Older Americans Month. We're celebrating with a free Ice Cream Social at the Center. Space is limited to reserve your space soon - but only if you can definitely make it please!

Sorry for the delay, but here are the details for our Earth Day Recycling Party on Monday, April 22, 2024. Advance ticket purchase ($15 per person) is required by Friday, April 19, 2024. No tickets will be sold at the door.
