US Dept.
Brief History-
Cornerstone began as a small group effort in 1989, with a few people working to meet the needs of their neighbors. At that time, women with children were becoming the new faces of homelessness in America. CCO felt drawn to meet this need to serve and shelter women with children. Over the following 20 years our programs have expanded to serve around 500 men, women, and children daily
. As a result, hundreds of singles and families are given an opportunity to reclaim their lives from the devastating effects of poverty and homelessness. Loss of job, lack of resources, health problems, and addictions are some of the causes of homelessness for our residents. But no matter their background or situation, all of our residents have come to Cornerstone seeking help. Our goal is to meet them where they are at and help them begin building a new life, one step at a time. of Housing and Urban Development, CSBG, Chicago Dept. of Family Support Services,
Illinois State Board of Education,
and our wonderful donors.
A big THANK YOU to our friends at Hikmah Relief for collecting and donating 2,500 articles of clothing! These items will be put to use in our FREE Thirft Store for shelter guests who come to us in crisis. 👕 ❤️🙌

This year Rose and Dennis, from A World Through Rose Colored Glasses and Moving Chicago LLC Budget Truck Rentals, have generously donated $10,000! We're so grateful for their support and care for their community!❤️

We Chicagoans are all preparing for the forecasted storm and for many, this just means making an extra grocery run. For those experiencing homelessness, it could be a matter of survival. We work year-round to connect people with meals, housing, and other resources, but there are many additional challenges people face during the winter.

"Denise found herself unemployed and alone. Too young for social security but old enough to experience age discrimination when looking for work, she knew she needed help...hard-working, sweet, and struggling to survive, Denise had been forced so far out on the margins of society that she couldn’t find her way back."

“The path to peace is a lifelong journey.
Sometimes you’re on a paved road.
Sometimes you’re walking on a gravel or dirt road.
It’s still your journey. It’s not just for a bit of time. It’s for a lifetime."

It's World Mental Health Day and we've got a special peek inside our Wellness Center for you! The pandemic really highlighted the need for accessible mental health service for EVERYONE. So, we sought to create a space to help meet the needs of shelter guests on site. In addition to our weekly mental health providers, clients can also join a support group, attend art and music classes, try restorative yoga, or journal. Staff also utilizes the space for conflict resolution, trauma informed care training, or just a space to talk to someone about their own wellbeing. If you need to talk to someone you can call 988 for free and confidential mental health support 24/7 Artwork in the space by the talented Suzanne Stewart Art #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #homelesslivesmatter #chicagononprofit
