ONCB - Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board

ONCB - Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board ONCB provides certifications that promote professional development and enhance the practice of orthopaedic nursing. The Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board (ONCB) was established in 1986 by the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) to promote the highest standards of orthopaedic nursing practice through the development, implementation and coordination of all aspects of certification for orthopaedic nurses.

Volunteer Spotlight - Recertification Committee Member – Vince Myers, RN, ONC®, CENP

I am Colonel Vince Myers and I have served in the US Army Nurse Corps for twenty years in hospitals across the US, Korea, Germany, in the Pentagon, and Afghanistan. By no surprise, a large number of injuries across the Army are related to orthopaedics. The opportunity to volunteer and serve ONCB allows me to remain current on the latest best practices, support the organization that supports me, and better understand the civilian challenges in orthopaedic nursing and how they relate to military nursing. I strongly believe certification is the gold standard for clinical care. At every opportunity, mentoring session, or leader engagement, I challenge our nurses to become certified not just for themselves, but because their patients deserve it.

Volunteer Spotlight - Recertification Committee Member – Carrie Coppola

I have been an orthopaedic nurse for 15 years, am currently the Orthopaedic Service Line Coordinator at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health and have maintained my ONC since 2016.

The reason I decided to volunteer with the ONCB was because I wanted to get more involved in the orthopaedic certification process. Volunteering with ONCB has allowed me to help with recertifications as well as provided an opportunity for me to network and develop professional relationships with fellow orthopaedic nurses throughout the country.

Orthopaedic certification demonstrates the advanced knowledge and skill of orthopaedic nurses. It also represents the dedication one has to their specialty and the ability to meet the challenges of modern nursing.

ONCB Volunteer Spotlight – Director – Barbara J. Larsen BSN, RN, ONC

I have spent my entire nursing career in orthopaedics. When I accepted my nursing position in June of 1980, it was just a position. I did not know on what unit or what shift I would be working. About 10 days into my orientation, I was told I would be working on the ortho unit. At first, I was not thrilled as my clinical on the ortho unit during nursing school was all 95-year-old fractured hips. I soon realized there is a lot more to orthopaedics than fractured hips. I joined NAON in 1982 and have been loving ortho ever since. I decided to sit for the certification exam in 1991…I told only a few people I was doing so. This was decades before certification was expected or even paid for by hospitals. I took the certification exam for my own self-worth and personal/professional satisfaction. I have maintained my certification for 30 years this May. I value my certification and proudly write ONC after my name in charting and have ONC on my hospital ID. I started with the ONCB on the Recertification Committee. I did this for a little more than a year before I entered my name in for a Director position on the board. Everything about applying for and interviewing for the role is extremely professional and efficient. I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Director on the ONCB in 2017 and am currently serving my second three-year term. I proud to be associated with this wonderful group of nurses who promote orthopaedic nursing certification.
