Thinking about getting your orthopaedic nurse certification, but that little voice keeps whispering "what if I don't pass the exam"?

Take a breath. You've got this, and you've got backup.

With ONCB's Retest for Success, one exam day doesn't decide everything. If it doesn't go your way the first time, you get a supported second chance to earn your credential. No starting over. No walking away.

So maybe the real question isn't "what if I fail." Maybe it's "what's keeping me from claiming what I already prove every single shift?"

Your knowledge is real. Your patients feel it. Now let's make it official.

Have you ever wondered who makes sure a nursing certification actually protects patients, not just the profession?

That's the job of the Orthopaedic Nursing Certification Board’s (ONCB's) Board of Directors, and we're looking for one person to help us get it right: a Public Member to serve as a full voting member.

This seat is reserved for someone who is not a registered nurse, but who brings real experience in one or more of these areas:
• Healthcare
• Certification
• Testing and assessment
• Law
• Finance
• Consumer advocacy
• Public protection

What's in it for you:
• Governance experience most professionals never get the chance to build
• A direct hand in decisions that protect patients and strengthen public trust in orthopaedic care
• A network of committed healthcare leaders who take that responsibility seriously

Every ONC® and ONP-C® credential ONCB issues rests on the integrity of decisions like the ones this Board makes. Your outside perspective helps keep that integrity strong.

One seat. Applications close August 31. Apply now, or if someone in your network fits, send this their way before the window closes.

Life happens. Sometimes it happens all at once. 💛

Maybe you're stepping away from nursing for a while. Maybe you're caring for a loved one, healing from an injury, or simply taking a season for yourself. Whatever the reason, here's something worth knowing: you don't have to lose the credential you worked so hard to earn.

ONCB offers Retired and Inactive designations so you can protect your ONC® or ONP-C® through life's transitions.
Leaving the profession? The Retired designation holds your place. When you're ready to return, you can reactivate.

Sidelined by illness, injury, or caregiving? The Inactive designation gives you room to breathe, with up to 5 years to meet your CE requirements or retest.
The one-time fee is just $50. That's it.

You put in the hours, passed the exam, and built the expertise. Those letters are yours. Let's make sure they're waiting for you when you're ready.

Nurse managers, let's talk about the one thing that quietly holds a great nurse back from pursing ONCB certification: the fear of not passing the exam.

Here's the good news. With ONCB's Retest for Success program, the first attempt is never the whole story. If a nurse doesn't pass, they get a supported second shot to earn their credential.
So encouraging your team to certify isn't a gamble. It's an investment with a safety net.

And here's the kicker: most nurses who join Retest for Success keep going and get certified. That means a more confident, more capable, more loyal team, and a unit reputation people notice.

Back your nurses. Champion the credential. You'll be leading the kind of team everyone wants to work on.

As orthopaedic cases move outpatient, your nursing team is not just a staffing line. It is quality infrastructure.

The evidence is hard to ignore: centers with more certified nurses see lower infection rates, fewer falls, and reduced failure-to-rescue. Fewer complications protect your patients and your margins.

Certification is not a nice-to-have. It is workforce capability as service-line strategy.

The Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board (ONCB) has certified orthopaedic nurses since 1986. We're a proud member of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, which sets the bar for certification best practices. We're also a longtime member of the American Board of Nursing Specialties, the group that advocates for specialty nursing certification as a form of consumer protection.

Organizations like these trust ONCB because our Board includes an outside voice: a Public Member, who is not a registered nurse.

We're recruiting for that seat now, and we need someone who brings real experience in one or more of these areas:

Healthcare

Certification

Testing and assessment

Law

Finance

Consumer advocacy

Public protection

What's in it for you:

Governance experience alongside leaders who already meet national standards for best practice

A direct role in decisions that protect patients and strengthen public trust in orthopaedic care

A network of healthcare and credentialing leaders worth having in your corner

If you've ever wanted a seat on a board that other credentialing bodies look to as a model, this is it.

Applications close August 31.

Certified orthopaedic nurses are not just proud. They are proven.

In ONCB's 2025 survey of more than 300 certified orthopaedic nurses, 86% said certification boosted their clinical confidence, and more than 78% said it raised their patients' confidence too. Research also links units with more certified nurses to lower infection and fall rates.

That is the company those letters keep you in. If yours lapsed, come back to it. Recertify by September 30.

Staffing a lean ASC team is hard enough. Wondering if your nurses can read the room during a rapid discharge should not be part of it.

Here is why certified orthopaedic nurses make your life easier: 79% say certification proves clinical competence, and in our manager survey, the preference to hire certified nurses scored 4.5 out of 5. They mentor others, take initiative, and stick around.

Trust your team's judgment. Spend less time worrying and more time leading.
