Hi everyone! We are excited to invite you to our 17th Annual NLVS Gala! This is a Chicago wide collaboration between NLVS chapters at universities throughout Chicago. This year's “Gift of Giving” Gala will be a week-long series of free events online from November 9 to November 15. Throughout the week, we will be hosting an online silent auction. All proceeds will go to benefit NLVS. Your proceeds will help fulfill our goal of providing affordable and free health services to patients in need through our free health clinic. NLVS is holding a restaurant fundraiser THIS TUESDAY, Oct 13 at the following Lou Malnati's locations: Libertyville, Oak Park, and Gold Coast. We are excited to announce that NLVS is holding a Mental Health Seminar hosted by Dr. Andrew Kim on Monday, October 5th from 5-6:30pm. We know with online learning, social isolation, and everything happening in our world right now, this time is difficult for all of us, so we invite everyone to join the conversation to help promote mental health transparency. We're going to take a break from our E-board introductions to tell you all about an exciting opportunity to connect with service organizations! The Loyola, Northwestern, and UIC undergraduate NLVS chapters have partnered with Bridge Start, a non-profit organization, to host a virtual volunteer fair on Wednesday, September 9th at 6pm. We know that volunteering opportunities are limited right now, so this is an opportunity to find community organizations in Chicago that aim to serve immigrant and refugee populations. Next up is our Community Services and Global Health Chair, Shashank Sandu. Shashank is currently a junior here at UIC majoring in Biology and Chemistry, with a minor in Spanish. NLVS caught his eye because the organization offers a great opportunity to interact with medical students and fellow undergraduates who are all interested in improving the community around us, whether that be through community service events, tutoring, or clinic volunteering. Albert Yen is the Patient Services/Student Involvement Chair and the Secretary for the UIC undergraduate NLVS chapter. He is a junior at UIC majoring in math and computer science major. Albert aims to be engaged with the community around Chicago and was drawn to NLVS because the organization serves such a wide range of people, from elementary school students seeking academic support to the elderly with medical needs. We are proud to introduce the UIC NLVS board for the Fall 2020 semester! First up is our President, Riya Parikh! Riya is a neuroscience and philosophy major and joined NLVS because she wanted to learn more about different communities to help relieve some of the inequality present throughout Chicago. Through this organization, Riya has met so many incredible people from different backgrounds, obstacles, and triumphs, and looks forward to carrying on the NLVS mission throughout the year. We are excited to announce that on Tuesday, August 11 from 5-6:30pm, Dr. Barrett will be presenting a virtual seminar on the impact of racial segregation in Chicago on health equity. The session will go into the root causes of racial health disparities and what healthcare professionals can do to integrate this information in clinical practice. Dr. Barrett focuses his work on health disparities and actually presents this seminar in a Public Health class that he teaches weekly at the UIC School of Public Health. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage in discussion about health equity and make something positive out of a negative situation. Are you interested in UIC Medicine or Nursing? We are excited to announce that we are collaborating with UIC Medical and Nursing Schools to host an information session and tour of both schools. The event will be on Tuesday, March 3rd at 9:30am-11am. We only have 20 spots open, so be sure to sign up first come first serve at https://forms.gle/TQydMs5styXuxf96A. Shoutout to those that were able to attend our NLVS Holistic Health Panel Series part 1: Medical School 101. Keep an eye out for our future panels with UIC dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, etc. After the panel, we were able to assemble 50 winter kits for the homeless. We hope everyone has a restful evening and sleeps a little better knowing they provided warmth to someone needing it the most.

Here are some pictures from our previous event on Saturday! NLVS members packaged and distributed hygiene care packages to the homeless individuals living in the Chicago area. The packages contained various items including deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, chapstick and water bottles. The reactions from the homeless people were inspiring and it made us motivated to do more. We are planning another event soon, which will be warm winter care packages. Stay on the look out for future events and how you can get involved!

Translator Sign-Up Summer 2017 (July-Sept)

Searching for ways to remain engaged and to give back to the community this summer? We have something in store!

NLVS is looking for translators for July, August, and September. Students from the NLVS Chapters at UIC, Loyola, and Northwestern are invited to participate. The biggest need is for translators is in Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, and Arabic.

- Who we are: New Life Volunteering Society (NLVS) at the Indo-American Medical Association Charitable Fund free clinic
- Where: 2645 W Peterson Ave
- When: Saturdays, 9am-3pm
- Lunch: South Indian food donated to the clinic
- What students will do: work with up to 3 medical students to improve communication with the patient.Translators will help take histories and explain the treatment steps. It's an important role for delivering good medical care!
- Patient population: a diverse group of underserved patients. Common chronic concerns are diabetes and hypertension. Acute summer concerns include rashes, allergies, and injuries. The clinic offers on-site labs and pharmacy, all for free!

Our professional organization offers services for disadvantaged people in need throughout the city of Chicago. Since the establishment, NLVS at UIC has been expanding its services. Every week, this organization offers tutoring to inner city Chicago students grades K-12. Also our organization sponsors the Health Education Clinic to the residents of Chicago every week. NLVS board members also organizes many short term and long term service projects every month for anyone to participate in.

May I share this volunteer opportunity with you all? We are looking for volunteers to help out the Expanding Your Horizons Chicago conference on Saturday, March 28th at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). EYH Chicago is a one-day conference where ~300 middle school girls participate in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math workshops. We will need volunteers from ~7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (not all volunteer shifts last all day). Example positions include helping with registration, setting up and assisting workshop leaders, ushering participants (young girls) between locations, distributing lunch, and cleaning up facilities. There will be food and refreshments for volunteers throughout the day. Volunteers are expected to attend a mandatory orientation session before the conference.
