Happy [almost!] Autumn Equinox! Here is a late-summer catch-up in photos of where my office has been!

✒️ I celebrated the signing of the Civil Rights Safeguard Act into law. SB377 strengthens Illinois’ ability to protect residents from discrimination in employment, housing, lending, health care, education, and more.

⚖️ I joined Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vásquez, elected officials, attorneys, community leaders, and people impacted by ICE’s Operation Midway Blitz to announce the filing of police reports alleging crimes committed by federal immigration agents. If you were a victim of ICE brutality during Operation Midway Blitz, you are encouraged to contact Attorney Brian Orozco at 312-580-1830 for a free consultation about filing a police report.

🏥 My team joined State Representative Lindsey LaPointe for a tour of The Boulevard of Chicago, a medical respite center on Chicago’s West Side that provides short-term shelter and medical assistance to unhoused neighbors. We learned about the compassionate care provided by their staff and the challenges residents face in securing permanent housing. Learn more about their work here: blvd.org.

🎉 We hosted a Senior Bingo with State Senator Graciela Guzman at Senior Suites of Kelvyn Park, where we enjoyed a great afternoon with residents.

🎒 Our office joined Darwin Elementary and Schubert Elementary for their back-to-school celebrations, distributing backpacks and connecting families with state resources.

🍕Our team joined Alderman La Spata 1st Ward, Commissioner Vasquez, and Sen. Guzmán at Middle Brow for a Meet Your Electeds event. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there personally due to family matters, but I’m grateful my team was there to represent our office and connect with neighbors.

🛹 My staff joined Northwest Side elected officials and advocates to discuss the state of the Logan Boulevard Skate Park on site.

🪪 My office hosted a DMV on Wheels with Illinois Secretary of State, Sen. Guzmán, and Commissioner Vasquez at Northwest Center, bringing DMV services to Belmont Cragin.

On Tuesday, September 29th, my office will be co-hosting a job fair along with Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vásquez and the Greater Northwest Development Corporation at Karlov Parker Events at 4055 W Parker from 11am to 2pm. We hope to see you there!

📢👷‍♀ This is the sixth round of grants from the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program, which launched in 2021 to ensure candidates from a wide-range of backgrounds had equal access to construction and building trades apprenticeship education. So far, the program has awarded $70 million serving over 7,000 residents.

Qualified entities can apply for grants between $150,000 to $550,000. Applications will be accepted until October 2nd at 5pm. To learn more and apply for the grant, visit the DCEO website: dceo.illinois.gov/aboutdceo/grantopportunities/2614-4323.html.

🗓️🍂 Save the date for our Fall Family Health Fair!

My office is partnering with State Senator Graciela Guzman, Anthony Quezada, Chicago's 35th Ward Alderman, and Kosciuszko Park Advisory Council for our annual Fall Family Health Fair on Saturday, October 17, from 10am to 1pm at Kosciuszko Park, 2732 N Avers Ave.

The fair will offer a variety of free health services and resources and free family-friendly activities. More details to follow!

Earlier this summer, Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law legislation that puts real limits on home and auto insurance rate increases, a fight I've been working on for years.

Insurance companies will have to justify annual increases above 10% to the Department of Insurance, which will have the power to modify or reject those rate increases.

This is a huge, huge win — not only for better policy, but a win for people power over lobbying interests. Thanks to all of you who wrote in, shared stories, came to our town halls, and participated in this campaign. You guys were a huge part of this win.

A principios de este verano, el gobernador JB Pritzker promulgó una ley que impone límites reales a los aumentos en las tarifas de los seguros de vivienda y de automóvil, una causa por la que he estado luchando durante años.

Las compañías de seguros tendrán que justificar ante el Departamento de Seguros cualquier aumento anual superior al 10 %, y este tendrá la facultad de modificar o rechazar dichos aumentos.

Esta es una victoria enorme, enorme —no solo para lograr mejores políticas, sino también para el poder de la gente frente a los intereses de los grupos de presión. Gracias a todos los que escribieron, compartieron sus historias, asistieron a nuestras reuniones públicas y participaron en esta campaña. Ustedes fueron una parte fundamental de esta victoria.

🗓️💚 Join us on Tuesday, September 29 for our last Working Family Office Hours this summer! My district office, at 3001 N Central Park Ave, will be open from 12 to 7pm for assistance with state agencies and resources for those who aren't able to come by during traditional work hours.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository will also be onsite to assist with SNAP benefits. And my staff can help with other state programs, like Unemployment, Medicaid, state licensure, transit benefits for seniors, DMV services, food pantry resources, and more.
