In Italy, we say:

"Dare il due di picche", which literally means "To give the two spades". Because iIn card games the two of spades is usually the lowest card, this idiom is used to symbolize a definitive rejection. This idiom is often used when someone turns down a romantic advance.

In Italy, we say:

"Si chiama Pietro e torna indietro," which literally translates to "Its name is Peter, and it comes back." This rhyming phrase is a playful way to remind someone that whatever they borrow—whether a pencil or a jacket—needs to be returned to its owner!

The saying is so common that often only the first part is said, and the meaning is still understood. For example:

"Can I borrow a pen?"
"Of course! Its name is Peter!"

The Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago is delighted to once again host Antonio Fava—actor, author, theatre director, and Maestro of Commedia dell’Arte and Comedy.

A leading authority on Commedia dell’Arte, Fava directs the Scuola Internazionale dell’Attore Comico (International School of the Comic Actor) in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He also designs and crafts traditional leather masks used in his school and performances, and teaches Commedia dell’Arte in schools, universities, and drama academies around the world. In addition, his masks are featured in prestigious museums and cultural institutions worldwide.

All aspects of his work are united by a single mission: to preserve and promote the tradition of Commedia dell’Arte through research and the transmission of its rich artistic and cultural heritage.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the world of Commedia dell’Arte and discover his latest book—tomorrow night, May 14, at 6 PM, here at the Institute!

The event is organized in collaboration with The Laughing Stock Theatre.
