How the elevator transformed America - The Boston Globe

Elevators have allowed Chicago architects to build tall, taller and tallest since the late 19th century to dazzling effect. P.S. Happy 177th Birthday, Windy City!

For most city-dwellers, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the passion that Americans afford trains, jets, and bicycles. But a small group of elevator experts consider this a travesty. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or resident...

Built in 1912, the Beaux-Arts Cook County Hospital played an important role in keeping Chicagoans healthy for almost a hundred years. Will the redevelopment of the West Side Medical Center breathe new life into this iconic structure?

It was reported yesterday that President Preckwinkle has directed county officials to hire a manager to oversee redevelopment of its West Side Medical Center campus that would include reuse of Old Cook County Hospital: http://tinyurl.com/kyn6l32
Since 2001 Landmarks Illinois has been campaigning for reuse of the former Beaux-Arts hospital building. We commend President Preckwinkle for her leadership on this matter and we continue to offer our assistance. See background on this long-time advocacy campaign and information on Landmarks Illinois’ reuse study for the hospital that was presented to county commissioners in 2003: http://tinyurl.com/c8mhz8a Photos: Antunovich Associates Inc.

Uptown Update: Why Does Egyptian Revival Architecture Matter?

It was November 1922, and Egyptologist Howard Carter had been combing the Valley of the Kings for five years in search of the tomb of King Tutankhamun. With the discovery of a step carved into rock and a stairway beyond, Carter's search was over, and the 20th Century was introduced to Horus, scarabs and Cavetto cornices. The Uptown Library will be presenting "Romancing the Sphinx: American Egyptian Revival Architecture," Thursday, November 14 at the Uptown Library, 929 West Buena Avenue, at 7 p.m.
