Su Casa Catholic Worker

Su Casa Catholic Worker Su Casa Catholic Worker is a house of hospitality and intentional community located in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago, IL.

Our community welcomes homeless families, provides meals and service to the neighborhood, and engages in activism. Su Casa Catholic Worker / Central American Martyrs Center is a house of hospitality and intentional community rooted in the Catholic Worker tradition. We are located in the Back-of-the-Yards neighborhood of Chicago, IL. Originally founded to serve Central American refugees, Su Casa no

w provides a home for Spanish-speaking families in the Chicago area, many of whom are women and their children fleeing domestic violence. We accommodate an average of five families at a time. Their length of stay is based on their needs and averages about one year. We also provide hot meals, clothing, and food to our neighbors in Back of the Yards three times a week. The Su Casa staff is committed to providing a healing environment that is abounding in love and free of violence. Nuestro ministerio tiene tres partes:

Happy May Day! On this day in 1933 Dorothy Day distributed the first copies of the Catholic Worker newspaper at a mass labor rally in Union Square, NY with the words:
"For those who are sitting on park benches in the warm spring sunlight.
For those who are huddling in shelters trying to escape the rain.
For those who are walking the streets in the all but futile search for work.
For those who think that there is no hope for the future, no recognition of their plight - this little paper is addressed."

Happy Birthday Servant of God Dorothy Day. "When you love people, you see all the good in them, all the Christ in them. God sees Christ, His Son, in us and loves us. And so we should see Christ in others, and nothing else, and love them. There can never be enough of it. There can never be enough thinking about it."

Rev. Theodore S. Cirone, C.M.F.

Su Casa is saddened to learn of the death of Father Ted Cirone, C.M.F. Father Ted was a longtime supporter of Su Casa and served as a board member of the Central American Martyrs Center as the recording secretary for over 6 years. He often directed his birthday and anniversary gifts to Su Casa and because of his encouragement the Claretian Missionaries awarded Su Casa multiple community development grants and the placement of full time Claretian Volunteers at no cost. It was because of his influence and encouragement that I began my involvement at Su Casa almost 20 years ago. Ted was a kind man, he was smart and wise, and an excellent spiritual director. He was a very good priest.

“The great scandal of the age is that those without the sacraments are so often superior in charity to the ‘practicing Catholic’ who partakes of the Eucharist and then stands by while his brother is exploited, starved, beaten, and goes on living his bourgeois life” - Dorothy Day on “Eucharistic coherence.”

Today is the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In June 1946 Servant of God Dorothy Day wrote, "This is the month of the Sacred Heart, the symbol of Christ’s love for man. We are supposed to love as Christ loved, to the extent of laying down our lives for our brothers. That was the New commandment. To love to the extent of laying down our lives, dying to ourselves. To accept the least place, to sit back, to ask nothing for ourselves, to serve each other, to lay down our lives for our brothers, this is the strange upside-down teaching of the Gospel."
May the love of Christ poured out in his heart, inspire us to work to bring about the Reign of God.

Saint Joseph, Advocate of the Poor and Marginalized
by Fr. Terrence J. Moran

On December 8, 2020 Pope Francis called for a Year of Saint Joseph. Joseph is a most popular saint – patron of the universal Church, of a happy death, of workers, of countless countries and is even subject to the indignity of having his statue planted upside down in real estate deals. Might Joseph also have something to say to us who strive to promote peace, justice, and the integrity of creation?

We are accustomed to calling Joseph a carpenter and have seen countless images of him in his shop at a work bench covered with wood shavings. However the Greek word that the gospel of Matthew uses to refer to his profession is tektōn. Its meaning is closer to craftsman or even handyman than to carpenter. In a small village like Nazareth there would have not been enough work on a daily basis for Joseph. So he was likely a day laborer, travelling from worksite to worksite. It’s not impossible that he worked at the construction of the splendid city of Sephoris, only about five miles from Nazareth. There he would have seen the miserably poor slaving to build palaces for the obscenely wealthy. Joseph’s travels would have enabled him to witness rather widely the conditions of his people. No doubt his heart widened as he listened to the stories of people crushed under the burden of debt and taxes, of the precarious life of the peasant farmer, of lives spent under the shadow of the Roman Empire which used crucifixion as an instrument to terrorize its colonial subjects. And even today, people find in Joseph someone uniquely sympathetic to the needs of those made poor and marginal.

Among the most poor and marginal in the world were and are women and girls. Joseph was extraordinary in his patriarchal culture in the way he took seriously the word and spiritual experience of a poor and marginal woman – his wife Mary. The law told him there were only two possibilities in the face of the news of her extraordinary pregnancy – to denounce her publicly or to divorce her privately. Either would have meant disaster for the life of the young girl Mary. Joseph had the courage to listen to a dream – a marginalized part of himself – that enables him to believe that God is doing something completely new in his life and the life of Mary.

Devotion to Joseph does not mean trusting his ability to sell a house if you bury his statue in the yard. It means to listen attentively and widely to the stories of those made poor and marginal and to allow our hearts to widen in compassion. It means paying attention to movements like Black Lives Matter and # MeToo. It means entertaining the possibility that God is showing us a new way forward, not in bankers or corporation presidents, but in a young woman like Greta Thunberg. True devotion to Joseph means compassionate listening, imaginative dreaming, and deep commitment to the new thing God is doing in the world.
St. Joseph…
Who believed in Mary’s word, make us a church that listens to women’s experience and their testimony of the action of the Spirit in their lives;
Who raised your son to be a peacemaker, make us a church of nonviolent resistance to war;
Who knew the joys of craftsmanship and the fatigue of work, make us a church that teaches the dignity of labor and that joins in the workers’ struggle for just wages and decent conditions.
Who listened to the voice of a dream, make us a church of deep contemplation, cautious of superficial answers, open to God’s surprises;
Who was a refugee, make us a church that is a home to the wanderer, shelter to the terrorized, haven to those in flight from violence and war;
Who was a member of a most unconventional family, make us a church of welcome to all families in all their wonderful diversity;
Who taught Jesus the wisdom in the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, make us willing disciples of Earth’s wisdom and loving kin of all creation.

Today Su Casa / The Central Americans Martyrs Center remembers and celebrates the lives of Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel; lay missionary Jean Donovan; and Maryknoll Sisters Maura Clarke and Ita Ford on the 40th anniversary of their martyrdom. May their faith and their actions in solidarity and with the poor teach and inspire us. May we too learn to live in communion.
“Several times I decided to leave—I almost could except for the children, the poor bruised victims of adult lunacy. Who would care for them? Whose heart would be so staunch as to favor the reasonable thing in a sea of their tears and loneliness? Not mine, dear friend, not mine.” Jean Donovan

Because of all of the amazing work in the world right now, we understand if you lost track of this little garden fundraiser. We are grateful to all the organizers and organizing happening, certain of its impact in moving us closer to justice, even when elected officials fail us. If you wanted to receive a monthly box of garden goodness, you have just one week left to let us know!

We are committed to sharing our garden goodies with neighbors, activists, and mutual aid networks serving BIPOC and immigrant communities, and your support in that work helps us to extend our reach further.

Life at Su Casa has always happened around food. As the world changes, for everyone’s safety we have had to make changes both to how we eat in the house, and how we share food with our neighbors through Frieda’s Place.

We are going back to our roots, growing in the garden next door to Su Casa. Would you join us in this work of sharing life and food in the Back of the Yards?

We are growing to deliver 10+ vegetable boxes per week to friends, neighbors, and supporters in July, August, and September. New sustainers pledging monthly donations of $25 or more will have the opportunity to tell us where one of those boxes will go each month - to any address within a 30 minute drive of Su Casa, or you can let us gift it within our network of neighbors.

Much like a Community Supported Agriculture Subscription (CSA box) we can't quite guarantee what will be in each box, but anticipate including:
+ greens (kale, chard, lettuce, etc)
+ root veggies (beets, carrots, radishes, green onions)
+ "green" veggies (string beans, peas, broccoli, etc)
+ "slicing" veggies (cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant, etc)
+ seasonal veggies (tomatoes, peppers, winter squash)
+ 1 or more culinary herbs (basil, parsley, oregano, etc)
+ recipes and/or guidance on using produce

To become a sustaining donor, visit our website at: https://new.sucasacw.org/donate/ and select $25 from the monthly donations option, then send us a quick email at sucasacw @ gmail.com to give us your preferred delivery address.

If you are already a sustainer, thank you so much! If you would like to participate in this campaign, first please share this appeal with a friend or family member who might be interested, and then reach out to us directly to discuss details.

If you would be blessed either by working in the garden (with all due social distancing) or receiving a gifted vegetable box, please email us at sucasacw @ gmail.com

+verduras (col rizada, acelga, lechuga, etc.)
+raíces (remolachas, zanahorias, rábanos, cebollín)
+vegetales “verdes” (vainitas, guisantes, brócoli, etc.)
+vegetales “para rebanar” (pepinos, calabacín, berenjena, etc.)
+vegetales temporales (tomates, chiles, calabaza)
+1 o mas hierbas culinarias (albahaca, perejil, orégano, etc.)

General information

Catholic Worker Philosophy: Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin organized the Catholic Worker movement in the 1930s.They applied the social teachings of the Catholic Church to the social problems of their day. Peter and Dorothy chose to live simply among the poor and to offer them hospitality. They saw the need to live nonviolently in a war- torn age. Following their example, we are committed to living and working among the poor and to building a prayerful community that lives a simple and nonviolent lifestyle. Hospitality Su Casa’s Hospitality Program provides a place of hospitality and healing for Hispanic families. Basing our model on the Works of Mercy, our goal is that families will move toward independence during their time at Su Casa. Families work with our Case Manager to address the causes of their homelessness. The Su Casa staff is committed to providing a healing environment that is abounding in love and free of violence. We cook and share a meal together at least five nights a week. We have a birthday party at the end of every month, and many other celebrations. Volunteers provide our families with counseling services, ESL training, and health and parenting classes. We also take our families to the zoo, museums, sporting events, trips, ice-skating, and more. Soup Kitchen Open since 1993, our soup kitchen, know by the community as Frieda’s Place, serves between 80 and 120 people every Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. Hot meals are prepared by local parishes and guests also receive clothing and additional food to take with them. Social Action Su Casa Workers often attend events to work for peace and justice, and we periodically sponsor events to educate the community on various topics surrounding issues of immigration and human rights. Locally, Su Casa workers seek to become active in partnering with people and agencies to make our neighborhood a better place to live.

I hope it is alright to post this here, this family lived at Su Casa a few years ago and I wanted to share the news in case anyone can help out
¿ERES TU HERMANO (a) AL QUE BUSCO?
¿CUENTO CONTIGO?, ¿ERES TU HERMANO (a) AL QUE BUSCO?.

Chantal de Alcuaz and I had a lovely evening last Sunday visiting Sr. Maria at her mother house in Monroe, Michigan and reading aloud the latest issue of Kairos. Thank you, Su Casa community, for this thoughtful and poignant edition and for the people who continue to guide my life. ❤️
