CPS first adopted a standalone policy for educating students experiencing homelessness in 1996 and last updated it in 2016, following CCH advocacy. We also provided ongoing feedback as this latest revision was finalized over the last year, driven by input from parents and caregivers of CPS students who have experienced homelessness.

While existing law and policy already include protections to remove barriers to enrollment and transportation, the updated policy addresses more specific practices, including using more inclusive language, providing private spaces for families to discuss their housing situations, and ensuring same-day enrollment.

In accordance with the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, the policy also covers students and families who are doubled up (temporarily staying with friends or relatives) because they have lost housing.

For nearly twenty years, our Horizons program has fostered creativity and healing among people with lived experience of homelessness, especially mothers with children. Founded by Director of Organizing Wayne Richard, the program helps participants share their truth and find their creative voice through poetry, expressive writing, and storytelling. The program is now led by Special Projects Organizer Claudia Cabrera.

This summer, we awarded renewable scholarships to six recent high school graduates through CCH's scholarship program. At a celebratory lunch in July, we honored the students' achievements and celebrated their upcoming transition to college.

Our scholarship program supports students with $4,000 scholarships, renewable for up to five years as they work toward a college degree. CCH also provides first-year winners with new laptops to set them up for success in their studies.

In addition to our six new awardees, eighteen returning sophomores, juniors, and seniors will receive scholarship support this school year. We're also proud to support five program alumni who are now pursuing graduate degrees with $500 stipends for books or other academic materials.

Since the program began in 2004, CCH has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarship support to 112 students.

Good food, summer heat, and bingo! CCH’s grassroots leaders and organizing staff gathered for their annual picnic at the Obama Center grounds. They celebrated a year of successful advocacy for solutions to homelessness by people who have experienced it themselves. Our grassroots leaders are an essential part of our work because we know that those closest to the problem are closest to the solution. Thank you all for your work this year!

These drastic funding cuts from the Trump Administration will put thousands of formerly homeless Chicagoans at risk of losing their homes again. There are already extremely limited housing options available for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity in Chicago. This will only make the problem worse.

We’re part of a coalition of community and advocacy groups pushing for solutions to address homelessness in our community. Our Keep Chicago Housed campaign is advocating for more funding for what works: affordable housing and crucial services to help people experiencing homelessness get back on their feet.

In response to these cuts and local funding shortfalls, we are asking the city to include funding in next year’s budget to prevent more than 3,000 people from losing their homes. Stay tuned for ways to join our advocacy efforts!
