A short interview with one of our students! Thank you to Kareem for sharing with us!

Q: How did you get started taking classes at GDS?
A: Having left my former dancing location, I was exploring other Chicagoland studios. I was impressed by both the faculty roster and class offerings at GDS and decided to give it a try. Convenience of location (right by the train and bus, a short bike ride/decent walk away) and pricing were also big draws.

Q: What benefits do you get from taking dance classes?
A: So many. There are the perhaps more obvious ones involving the physical aspect of dance class: the cardio, the stretching, the muscle AND bone strengthening, etc. There are also the mental benefits: my cognitive skills get a work out as I try to remember combinations, learn new skills, and new ways to move my body. All of these things also help to contribute to the emotional benefits I get from dance.

Q: What makes GDS stand out?
A: The good folk, as I like to call them, at GDS are extremely welcoming, which is a huge factor for me... at GDS, you get the sense that they care enough to get involved with who you are as a person and not just as a student/client. I believe that they truly enjoy movement and dance, and just want to do their best to share that feeling and experience with anyone who wants to join in on the fun.

Q: What would you say to someone considering taking either their first dance class or their first class in a long time?
A: The same thing I would say regarding pretty much any new experience – just do it. Not what you thought it would be or you just plain don’t like it? Then you can stop. A bit harder or require more time than you have to commit to it right now? Then you can stop and revisit when you’re more ready. It does take some work and discipline even if you are just doing it for fun. But just imagine if this is one of the things that you get into that brings absolute joy into your life? If you have had any inkling of an urge to try it, why risk the deprivation of that joy? See you in class -- we can learn together.

Final day of testing: Sunday, April 18, 2021.

"PCR test: This tests for the presence of the actual virus’s genetic material or its fragments as it breaks down. This is the most reliable and accurate test for detecting active infection.
Antigen test: This test detects bits of proteins on the surface of the virus called antigens. Antigen tests are typically considered rapid, taking only 15 to 30 minutes but are less accurate than a PCR test. Rapid antigen tests are most accurate when used within a few days of the start of your symptoms, which is when the largest amount of virus is present in your body. Because this test is not as accurate as a PCR test, if an antigen test is negative, your healthcare provider may order a PCR test to confirm the negative test result."

Care for Real, a neighborhood food pantry, is in need of volunteers! Help is needed in Rogers Park on Tuesday mornings and afternoons as well as Thursday mornings and evenings. In Edgewater (5339 N Sheridan), volunteers are needed Monday through Saturday mornings and afternoons. The Rogers Park location (1545 W Morse) will soon be launching an outdoor Thursday evening food distribution, and many additional volunteers are needed. Volunteers can sign up to serve occasionally, weekly, or more! Getting started volunteering is quick and easy. Send an email to [email protected] or sign up at careforreal.org/volunteer. Thank you for helping feed our neighbors in need!
I found a pair of what appeared to be prescription glasses or perhaps just reading glasses on the stairs at the Morse Red Line this evening at around 9pm. I left them with the CTA Attendant. If you are missing a pair of glasses and rode the L Train this afternoon or evening and either boarded or exited on Morse, they may be yours.

Every week I speak to Chambers of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions and other businesses and organizations about the incredible power of gratitude with a 30-minute talk entitled: “Conquering Pandemic Anxiety Through Gratitude”. My Zoom presentation demonstrates how gratitude has transformed countless people in a world of way too many unhealthy coping mechanisms. Your members will learn about: • How gratitude can overcome any life-changing event • The power of the “You Are” exercise • The 60-second gratitude challenge • How writing in a daily gratitude journal can change a life With over 1050 gratitude videos posted on my YouTube channel, thousands have seen my message. I recently spoke in Honolulu, San Antonio, Minneapolis, San Diego and at our US military bases. My published books include “The Brooker’s Daily Gratitude Journal,” “Six-Word Lessons to Embrace Gratitude” & other books on gratitude. I would love the opportunity to speak to your group about how embracing gratitude can change their lives too. “Gratitude turns what you have into enough” Thank you so much for your consideration. It amazes me that Bill and Trudy can operate this page AND their Rogers Park News page, which actively supports hateful, racist content. We don't need racism in Rogers Park and it cetainly does nothing for our business community.
