PARTNER PEEK
Shine On, Chicago!
Who:
Jim Kropp
Email: [email protected]

What:
Shine On, Chicago! is a mobile production classroom designed to teach teens the basics of video production and photography, while creating awareness of the careers available in the television and photo industries. Look to their website for participant testimonials and more information on upcoming events.

Past program highlight: Shine On, Chicago! just wrapped up a one week teen cohort in partnership with the Art Institute! On the first day of the program, participants explored the work of Dawoud Bey: Night Coming Tenderly, Black. In the following days, they explored other photography in the Art Institute and went on a photo safari in the Chicago loop area. They were then able to visit the Art Institute imaging studio, where they talked with photographers and even had their own personal items and portraits photographed!

Upcoming program highlight: Shine On, Chicago! will be partnering with Chicago Public Arts Group to create a digital archive that outlines the 300+ public art pieces that they’ve created over the past few years. Shine On participants are going to serve as photo documentarians, documenting the murals and public art pieces scattered around Chicago and making them available for digital publication. At the end of the program, the participants’ work will be exhibited in the Wintrust Bank in Wicker park in September and October for community members to view.

Check out the photo and video galleries here.

Where:
Shine, On Chicago is a mobile classroom! They travel around Chicago serving different communities and exploring art in and around Chicago. Check out their website for upcoming programs and events near you!

When:
See their website or CCOL for upcoming programming.

Why:
The mission of Shine On, Chicago! Is to serve teens in under-served neighborhoods. They teach high school & middle school students the basics of photography and video production in after school and summer programs. Through this process, teens learn how to work in a team environment, storytelling and interviewing skills, and respect for themselves and the production equipment. Shine On, Chicago helps youth manage and create a portfolio they can use as they move out into the world of photography and video production!
