Heads up, Cook County! Be prepared for this weekend's snowstorm. ⤵️

[3:18 PM CST Friday, January 29]

We started this week with snow and we are going to end it in similar fashion. Confidence is high that snow will move in late Saturday afternoon into early evening, picking up in intensity quickly after it onsets. Because the snow is anticipated to be heavy with potential for significant accumulations, roads will become snow-covered and dangerous travel conditions are looking more likely. The winds will also aid in this, gusting to 25 to 35 mph, providing periods of very low visibility during the heavier snowfall. Consider altering non-essential travel for Saturday evening.

Don’t forget to bring all pets indoors. Make sure they have a warm dry place with plenty of food and water.

Other winter safety tips:
-Both salt and ice can irritate your dog’s footpads. Avoid the salt when possible and wash the dog’s paws with warm water when you return home.
-Dogs and cats may have fur coats but they also have exposed areas that are susceptible to frostbite. Limit their time outdoors. If you suspect frostbite on any extremity, including the nose or the tips of the ears, contact your veterinarian.

Roadways, sidewalks, overpasses and bridges might be slick this morning! An additional 1-2” of snow is expected throughout the day. Give yourself plenty of commute time and be sure to maintain a 200-foot distance behind snow plows and salt trucks.

Stay off roads during & after a winter storm. If you must drive, #DontCrowdthePlow. Move over for snowplows, disabled vehicles and emergency response crews.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Metra, Pace and Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) leaders today officially launched a pilot project to improve public transportation in south Cook County, starting with reduced Metra fares on the Metra Electric and Rock Island lines and extended service on Pace’s 352 Halsted route.

Fair Transit South Cook, a three-year pilot project, aims to reduce costs and make transit more convenient for residents and essential workers in south Cook and north Will counties. Ultimately, the pilot seeks to provide seamless transfers between all transit operators in subsequent phases.

Under the pilot, all riders on the Metra Electric and Rock Island lines will pay Metra’s reduced fare rates – which are normally for seniors, K-12 students and other eligible groups – for all tickets. The reduced fare tickets are available now from ticket agents, ticket machines and the Ventra app. The paper and mobile tickets will be marked for use on the Metra Electric and Rock Island lines only.

Updated timetables for Pace’s Halsted 352 service can be viewed from their website. Information about both pilot initiatives can be found on the County’s website at: www.cookcountyil.gov/FAIRTRANSIT

General information

Cook County is a county in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is the second most populous county in the United States after Los Angeles County. The county has 5,294,664 residents,[1] which is 43.3% of all Illinois residents. Cook County's population is larger than that of 29 individual U.S. states and the combined populations of the seven smallest US states.[2] There are over 130 incorporated municipalities in Cook County, the largest of which is the county seat, Chicago, which makes up approximately 54% of the population of the county. That part of the county which lies outside of the Chicago city limits is divided into 30 different townships. Geographically the county is the fifth largest in Illinois by land area and shares the state's Lake Michigan shoreline with Lake County. Cook County was created on January 15, 1831 out of Putnam County by an act of the Illinois State Legislature. It was the 54th county established in Illinois and was named after Daniel Cook, one of the earliest and youngest statesmen in Illinois history, who served as the second U.S. Representative from Illinois and the first Attorney General of the State of Illinois. Shortly thereafter, in 1839, DuPage County was carved out of Cook County.
