Illinois primaries will take place on June 28, 2022! Voters will select a republican candidate they believe should run against JB Pritzker for governor of Illinois in the November general election. The Latino Policy Forum takes a non-paisan approach to inform voters and increase Latino voter turnout. This year, we co-sponsored the first Republican Forum with our partners at the The Chicago Urban League, Union League Club of Chicago, hosted by NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago. Karen Freeman-Wilson, President and CEO of The Chicago Urban League, asked Republican candidates about their plans to reduce the racial wealth gap in IL. Here are their answers to her question: ______ Freeman-Wilson: "In 2019, McKinsey & Company issued a report that talked about the cost of the racial wealth gap to black and Latino families and the economy at large. What will candidates do to reduce the racial wealth gap in IL?" Schimpf & Schofield for Illinois: "We have to have policies that support everybody in IL... When you have a candidate that will emphasize a new direction and that we need to make IL more competitive, then it will increase wealth for everybody. We also need a candidate from the middle class who understands the challenges the lower and middle-class face... My lieutenant governor running mate and I are that team who understands that you need a new start in IL." Max Solomon for Governor: "I believe that the best way to build wealth is to empower the individual...It would be irresponsible of the government to regulate businesses, professions, industries, and manufacturers to the point where it becomes a burden to succeed. What I will do as governor is deregulate, give power back to the individual and make sure that we help every ethnicity to equal access." Richard Irvin: "When I became mayor, I made it a point to do what we needed to do to close that gap and give opportunities to folks. As mayor of Aurora, we've done more economic development in my first four
Sylvia Puente, President and CEO at Latino Policy Forum asks Republican candidates for governor, Richard Irvin, Max Solomon for Governor, and Senator Paul Schimpf, how they will aid Latinos in the recovery from #COVID19. This opportunity was made possible at the first Republican Gubernatorial forum of the 2022 election season, co-hosted by NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago. The Latino Policy Forum co-sponsored the event along with the The Chicago Urban League and Union League Club of Chicago. Watch the Q&A here: Puente: According to the 2020 census, the Latino Population grew my 15 percent in Illinois over the past decade. We also know #Latinos have been disproportionately impacted by the #pandemic. What would you do to ensure that Latinos are not left behind in the recovery? Richard Irvin: "As Major of Aurora, I have a large Latino population. 42% of the population in Aurora is Latino. I work very close with this community....what I will do is provide opportunity. What everybody wants to do is work, be able to raise their family, they want to be able to live the American Dream. I will ensure that happens." Max Solomon for Governor: "The first thing to do is open line of communication with the Latino community. Empower them. What are their values, what are their beliefs?... I would empower each community, not only Latino... giving the power back to you to make your own decision for your own health." Senator Paul Schimpf: "I will do the same thing for the Latino community that I will do for every community in Illinois, every citizen of Illinois. I will listen, I will learn about the specific challenges, and then I will lead in a manner that brings us together and opens opportunity for all the people in Illinois." Comment your thoughts on how the Republican candidates addressed their plans to support Latinos in IL. The three Republican candidates are vying for the party's nomination to challenge Governor JB Pritzker in the November election.

"50% of Latino students in #college either stopped or changed their college plans, compared to 25% of white students during the #COVID19 crisis. We have seen a decline in Latino students enrolled in college, too. These students had to drop out to help their struggling families and get jobs. So, what is it going to take for this generation to be able to complete college? It will take them so much longer to finish college and have that path of economic mobility that they were on. We do not yet know the unintended consequences of the educational impact on this generation of students and how that will play out in the future." -- Remarks from Sylvia Puente, President and CEO at the Latino Policy Forum, during an interview with WBEZ , alongside Dr. Marina Del Rios and Dr. Geraldine Luna of Illinois Unidos.
"The crying need that we have heard is the need for #mentalhealth. We forget how many people have died in our community. I know the Latino community is not alone in that, but a staggering number of people have not survived the #COVID19 crisis. Most of the people who have passed away, and this is true for the #latino community, are of working age. Households have lost their income earner, and they're grieving. Economic assistance helps with a piece of that. But, the need for bilingual, bicultural mental health counseling is something that we must invest in, and we don't have anywhere near the number of resources or professionals to help address that." -- Remarks from Sylvia Puente, President and CEO at the Latino Policy Forum, during an interview with WBEZ , alongside Dr. Marina Del Rios and Dr. Geraldine Luna of Illinois Unidos
