Chicago City Clerk

Today, as part of our Civic Engagement Program Chicago Social Science and Civic Engagement students from Chicago Public Schools had the opportunity to expand on their policies at the first ever virtual Next Gen City Council! Students from Amundsen High School , Lakeview High School, Michele Clark High School, Benito Juarez Community Academy, and Harlan Rising High School worked together to develop policy solutions that would positively impact our city.

In the afternoon, students participated in a virtual City Council meeting acting as Mayor, Clerk and Alderpersons. Students had the opportunity to deliberate, vote, and pass an ordinance. They also had the opportunity to hear from various leaders and elected officials across our state and city.

Thank you, Chicago Mayor's Office for providing the students with some words of encouragement and reminding them how important it is to be civically engaged.

The students were also joined by Alderman La Spata 1st Ward, Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez for the 25th Ward, Alderman Andre Vasquez, 40th Ward Chicago, and Alderman Matt Martin - 47th Ward who dropped in to provide their important insight on the policy crafting process.

Thank you, to Janice Jackson of Chicago Public Schools and Deputy Governor Sol A. Flores for sharing your inspiring words and for sharing your stories with us.

I'm so proud of our #cpsciviclife students and all of their incredible policy ideas! These students have worked incredibly hard all in an effort to create positive impact for all Chicagoans. #WeRunCouncil

I'll be facilitating a PD on Tuesday of next week for Chicago Public School teachers. The whole SSCE team will be there. Come learn with us...sign up through the Learning Hub!
Recently, we have seen great debate in the news about values, civility, and what we as citizens perceive as good traits in our leaders at all levels of government. By studying Judy Baar Topinka’s life and philosophy, students can discuss qualities of leadership as well as how her thinking and life is relevant today. Just Judy, A Citizen and Leader for Illinois is a great compliment to any civics course and it explores such issues as good government in the form of good management and leadership; civility; protocol; compromise; integrity, perseverance; heritage; respect and advocacy.
The Chicago Chapter of VeteransForPeace.org will be submitting a workshop proposal on the militarization of youth and its effects on youth and the community.
Our department created an amazing list of civic engagement opportunities for youth to be engaged during spring break. Check it out, share and encourage your students to sign up!
Great kick off to Civics today with 50+ Powerful CPS teachers at AL RABY HS. Remember, you are powerful!
