What does it actually cost to start a law firm in Chicago?

Somewhere between $1,200 and $23,400 for year one, and almost all of that range comes down to one question: are you starting cold, or leaving a firm with clients who’ll follow you?

A few Illinois numbers that surprise people:

→ ARDC registration is the only mandatory cost, and it’s free if you were admitted since January 2025
→ If you form an entity, it must be a PLLC, not an LLC
→ Malpractice insurance isn’t required, but a first-year policy often costs under $1,000, and defending even a meritless claim averages about $28,000
→ ISBA membership includes vLex Fastcase, a $695/year value

But the biggest cost isn’t on most startup checklists: operating capital to cover six to twelve months of business and personal expenses.

Do you need an office to practice law in Illinois?

No. And we say that as a company that rents offices to attorneys.

Illinois has no brick-and-mortar requirement, and ABA Formal Opinion 498 confirms a practice can be fully virtual. But “do I need an office?” is really four questions:
✔️ Do you need an office?
✔️ Do you need a business address? (Your ARDC address is public. Think about that before you list your home.)
✔️ Do you need somewhere to meet clients?
✔️ Should you be working alone?

That last one is the question nobody writes about, and it might matter most.

Bill Reynolds says the case never looks as good as it does when it walks through the door.
That's exactly when attorneys talk themselves down. The client wants to hire you. But the moment you stop asking for what you're worth just to keep them interested, you've already told them your rate was negotiable in the first place.

You won't learn your worth by discounting it. You learn it by asking for it and getting paid what you're actually worth.

There are parts of a case AI will never be allowed near. Attorneys will still be needed for exactly those moments.

AI can't sit in the room with your client. It can't walk into court for you. It shouldn't touch confidential information outside a secure environment.

What it can do is help with legal research, strengthen your arguments, and make you a more effective attorney in the areas where you actually need the help.

No playbook for the business side. No one to ask when the practical questions piled up faster than the legal ones. Just the assumption that figuring it out alone was part of the deal.
