It was a joy to join the Beacon Block Club in Uptown this evening and give an update on my work this year! I used to live on Dover Street right next door so it felt like being back home again. Neighbors raised issues around gentrification and affordable housing, evictions and houselessness, and intentionally working to keep the diversity we all cherish. I will be keeping these conversations and policy focuses front of mind for the upcoming legislative session. I’ll be introducing a few prices of legislation to support our long-term residents. More to come!

It was a joy to convene our final People's Legislative Council of 2021 with Seniors at the Levy House in Rogers Park. We organized the meeting to dive into legislation, how the state can better support seniors, and how to implement co-governance into policymaking and department oversight. We also welcomed Jane Addams Senior Caucus after our discussion to build community and empower seniors through advocacy. We’re going to develop laws and systems that work for our seniors!

Everyone there was a superhero coming out bravely after receiving their vaccines, especially the healthcare workers helping administer them. So proud of everyone that came out today! #childrencarryon

Today is #InternationalDayofPeoplewithDisabilities! More than 1 billion people worldwide live with a disability. I encourage us all to recognize that not all disabilities are visible. We need to push to make our systems & spaces accessible to all people living with disabilities.

I enjoyed attending the tree lighting this afternoon at Giddings Plaza in Lincoln Square! My family has lived in this neighborhood for 40 years, and my mom especially enjoyed the tree and decor around the holidays in the plaza, so it was lovely going for the first time in my capacity as state Senator. Shop small this weekend everyone, and be kind to yourself and our neighbors. It’s been a rough 18 months and it’s wonderful to see folks out and supporting our small businesses. A hearty thank you to the staff at Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce!

On Friday, my office launched our #ChildrenCarryOn campaign to celebrate young people and help families locate the COVID-19 pediatric vaccine in the 7th district. Over the last few years, our children have been immensely flexible and resilient. Children ages 5-11 have had to alter their school life, go without seeing friends, their extra-curricular activities, and their self-care. Some of our children are also coping with the loss of their family members throughout this ruthless pandemic.
My staff and I wanted to kick off the #ChildrenCarryOn campaign to highlight the true resilience of the children of the 7th District!

THANK YOU to everyone who stepped up for our new Afghan refugee neighbors to donate blankets, pillows, toiletries, toys, and other supplies to welcome them to their new home in our district! Today we packed up a U-Haul full of supplies that will be given to our new residents! Neighborhoods like Rogers Park, Edgewater, West Ridge, and Uptown, to name a few, have always been an entry point for people new to America, and I couldn’t be more humbled or happy at how many of you generously donated supplies! Thank you Rep. Kelly Cassidy, Ald. Harry Osterman, Ald. Maria Hadden, Sen. Christina Pacione-Zayas, Sen. Ram Villivalam, and all the other elected officials and local small businesses and social service agencies that generously donated and coordinated with us to pull this off! So honored to represent this community.

This morning I and Rachel, a district parent, kicked off my office’s #ChildrenCarryOn campaign to really shine light on the resilience of the children of the 7th district and to celebrate that kids ages 5-11 can now get the Covid-19 vaccine! Rachel’s son wanted to support and cheer on other kids getting vaccinated so he made over 200 stickers for us to give out today! The young people of the 7th district altered all they know to stay safe over the last two years! These kids truly are Covid-19 superheroes! Stay tuned with my office over this 10 week campaign for more information on where to get the vaccine and how we are celebrating the children who carry on! #ChildrenCarryOn #vaccineequity

I wanted to take a moment to honor my Uncle Sam Harrison, who along with my mom and their siblings helped integrate Lincoln Square in 1981 when my family moved there and who lived in the 7th district for many decades and who served in the Navy, Rank Sh3. He helped raise me (and bought me my first bike when I was 5 the day before he went to bootcamp so I wouldn’t be sad) and today I thank and honor him for his service. Give it up for all the uncles out there who are veterans! #VeteransDay

Happy Veterans Day to all of those who served, currently serve, and their families. Today we must recognize the need for mental health access for our veterans of color, women, and LGBTQIA community. Rates of homelessness and mental illness are still high among our veteran community. My office wanted to share the resources in district for our service members. Please feel free to reach out to our district office to find out other benefits for current and veteran service members.

Today I, Alderwoman Maria Hadden and the Rogers Park Business Alliance joined small business owners in cutting the ribbons to celebrate the opening of 15 businesses in Rogers Park! As the son of a longtime Rogers Park salon owner, I took great joy in celebrating these wonderfully diverse business owners and seeing the vast array of goods and services they’re offering the community! I’m in awe of these businesses creativity, tenacity, and passion for what they do and how they support our community. Congratulations to all of you who cut ribbons today! Make sure to support your local retail and shop small businesses! 🛍🛒

Tonight I held my second Youth People's Legislative Council at Uplift Community High School. Uplift provides a student-centered curriculum focused on social justice. These bright minds always enlighten me. We talked about violence in the community, taking care of our mental health, and having real data conversations around people experiencing homelessness and potential ways to create stable housing. These young people are my policy advisors! I’m excited to fight with their ideas and solutions in mind next session.
