Next CVO Meeting June 17, 2020 on Zoom

http://www.coalitionofvets.org/next-cvo-meeting-june-17-2020-on-zoom-2/

The next meeting of CVO will be on Zoom on this coming Wednesday, June 17th at 7 PM. Information for connecting on Zoom is below.

This is the election meeting! We will hold elections for the CVO Executive Committee.

We will also have a discussion and presentation of Illinois Joining Forces, an important veterans coalition in Illinois that CVO is a member of. In a related discussion, we will discuss recruiting volunteers for our CVO Committees.

Additionally, we will soon be facing the possibility that the Jesse Brown VA will allow us to have face-to-face (f2f) meetings in the not-too-distant future. If so, we will discuss how we might go to hybrid meetings that will allow people to show up at the VA or connect and participate via Zoom.

The next meeting of CVO will be on Zoom at 7 PM on Wednesday, June 17th.

The Montford Point Marines need your help to redeem our taxes and repair our building by December 11, 2018. Save our Building: the Montford Point Marine Veteran Center. These WWII veterans deserve to have a place where they are safe to tell their stories, engage in the camaraderie of other veterans and continue to support their community and other veterans.

The building serves as a veteran and community referral center and meeting space. Now they are in danger of losing their building. With commitments by government and local funders not coming through, $100,000 in repairs and taxes are needed. Please help save the Montford Point Marine Veterans Center.

The Montford Point Marines are the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps in a segregated bootcamp located at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, between 1942 – 1949. These WWII heroes answered the call and have served our nation in its time of need.

In 2012, the Montford Point Marines were the recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal. In 2013, a Naval Vessel was named the Montford Point Marine. In July of 2018, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina a Monument was dedicated to their service.

Following a reunion in 1965, these WWII veterans created the Chicago Montford Point Marine Association, a 501(c)3 charitable organization. For over 53 years the Montford Point Marine Association has been dedicated to educating the public, supporting youth, and serving the community and our veterans.

Montford Point has been self sustainable for over 50 years. Through its Scholarship program, it has given $40,000 to students, the Christmas Basket provided $50,000 for veterans and needy families, The Back to School program provided over 1000 book bags. We have provided over $50,000 at Veterans Bingo at the VA hospital.

Please help save the Montford Point Marine Veterans Center.

Hey all, Veterans Upward Bound - Chicago is hosting a free webinar for veterans today @ 4pm. It's called "Managing the Digital You" and is focused on how to use social media, Facebook, LinkedIn, and others for both your education and for your career! Sounds like it's going to be a cool program! You have to sign up with VUB at the link below, then I can send you the Zoom link! Hope you'll join us! https://forms.gle/ZS3HaBsJPZvfcERt6
The next CVO Meeting is on February 17 at 7 p.m. on Zoom The Guest Speaker at this month’s meeting will be the Director of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Rick Ament. Join us and invite your members to this special event as he addresses the veteran community and service organizations! Make Your Voices Heard!
Opportunity for Veterans! New Musicals Inc (NMI) is adapting veteran's stories into ten-minute musicals to be filmed as part of a web-series to honor veterans. Veterans whose stories are selected for development will receive a $1000 honorarium and hold on to the rights of their stories. Don't let the "musical" aspect dissuade you. No musical talent needed to apply. NMI just needs a compelling story from your military background – just one story – not a compilation -- and they will bring a composer, lyricist, and professional actor together to turn it into song. They will also welcome you into the collaboration process if you want to be included on the creative side. See the link for info and a very short video that explains the project. Deadline is November 20. www.nmi.org/veterans
My nonprofit organization. Chess Vets invites you to join our team for online chess play. If you are stuck at home, there are literally millions and millions of chess games played at every level, every day, on the internet. YOU DO NOT need to be a vet to join our main team, just a desire to play chess with us. If you don't play chess yet or just want to improve your game, you can learn from this chess site and/or attending one of our webinars routinely held for the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) from Washington for FREE. By the way, joining the website and/or our team is totally FREE. You have nothing to lose and we dot try to sell ANYTHING. I am just retired from the military and my wife wants me to have a hobby. We hold FREE Arena tournaments weekly at Tuesday & Wednesday @ 6pm (cst) Regular G/30. We have eliminated Blitz, due to the lack of participation. We will however organize any online tournament, just PM me. We also would like to form any "breakout" teams, (ex. Navy, Army, Airborne, Vietnam, VFW, VFW Post, NJROTC, etc). Each team just needs a team captain eventually. Chess playing ability is not a factor. This will allow us to form team battles (Ex, Army vs Navy, VFW vs AL, Airborne vs Infantry, etc. You can join any team you are qualified for. If you want me to create a team, just PM me. I hope you enjoyed the trailer to our documentary “Operation Torrent”, where veteran Josh Collins prepares for the Race to Alaska in order to raise awareness and resources to help prevent veteran su***de. In this video, Josh describes life with Traumatic Brain Injury and its perilous effects. As he shares his personal story, you will understand why su***de is too often a consideration of veterans with TBI. Join us on this mission by sharing this video and by following us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/operationtorrent. Together we can make a difference for our soldiers! Thanks again for your support!
We believe Connection is the Cure and we both seem to support our Veterans, so I wanted to take a second to connect with you on our new, veteran-focused documentary Operation Torrent.
