Joe is a Department of Environmental Science and Studies (DePaul University) student that spent his summer at the Shedd Aquarium with Horticulture Manager, Christine Nye. Joe tested two garden beds-- one amended with natural fertilizers, and one left to its own devices-- to see the differences in produce grown directly on the Shedd's grouds. Move over sharks! Our dolphins are taking the limelight at the moment. There has been some amazing common dolphin activity along our coast, and we’re anticipating the arrival of more humpback and Southern right whales, for the opening of our field research program in June. https://www.facebook.com/OceansResearch/posts/10157913058237665
We can’t wait to open back up the field research internship this year, with some exciting new additions, like our smooth hammerhead shark tagging project. This is the first research project focusing on smooth hammerhead movement ecology, using long-term internal tags! https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=10157843892622665
Register today for an afternoon centered on how to support ethical and sustainable practices in our clothing choices! The hour long program will include powerful guest speakers and a virtual fashion showcase! DePaul students, don’t miss the opportunity to submit your upcycled, thrifted, or ethically sourced designs to our fashion contest by April 12th! Learn more and register: bit.ly/fashionrevolution2021 Fashion Revolution Week occurs every year in remembrance of the Rana factory collapse in Bangladesh that killed 1,134 people due to gross negligence of safe working conditions. We tagged two white sharks and two hammerheads! We can’t wait to track the movements of these elusive animals. This is the first project to use long-term internal tags on smooth hammerheads to study their movement ecology. https://www.facebook.com/OceansResearch/posts/10157783928622665
"Are we starving great whites to death?" Check out the article in the Daily Maverick, discussing the current plight of sharks in South Africa, that quotes our director of research, Dr Enrico Gennari. https://www.facebook.com/OceansResearch/posts/10157631097737665
Do you know Shredder, the white shark? Shredder is a male white shark, around 3m, that was first seen in Mossel Bay, South Africa, in 2016. Researchers observed that he had sustained injuries to his dorsal fin, that were likely caused by coming into contact with a boat propeller. Sadly, our white shark populations are currently under threat, and need our support. Find out more in the blog… https://www.facebook.com/OceansResearch/posts/10157579398742665
Today's Field Friday features a NEON technician in Domain 05's Upper Michigan site collecting dust canisters as part of an Assignable Asset project. Dr. Bala Chaudhary and other researchers from the Department of Environmental Science and Studies (DePaul University) have partnered with NEON to install dust collectors at 20 NEON sites across the country to assess the mycorrhizal fungal communities present in the air. Through the NEON Assignable Assets program, NEON is making infrastructure and personnel available to support programs for researchers at academic institutions, government agencies and other organizations. Leveraging NEON’s existing assets and infrastructure provides researchers with a cost-effective and efficient way to gather field data for their own programs. Find out more about NEON's Assignable Asset program here: https://buff.ly/2KqkemP
Are you a elasmobranch person, a cetacean person or cephalopod person? We've seen plenty of them all this past year. Here's a little taster of some of the marine life our field research interns and our team have observed. https://www.facebook.com/OceansResearch/posts/10157500942067665
Our Oceans Research Foundation, Sea the Change students, took the opportunity to explain the ocean habitat and it's importance for World Habitat Day. We want to remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our environment. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10157466845697665&id=80871762664
Who’s watching Shark Week? Did you see our Oceans Research director of research, Dr Enrico Gennari, and other shark experts in the first episode of the week ‘Air Jaws: Ultimate Breach Off’? What did you think? If you missed it, here’s an idea of the kind of action we witness from our Mossel Bay sharks, while out conducting our research… https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=311003260101800
Can you help us to save our sharks? South Africa’s coastal shark populations – including the iconic hammerheads and great whites – are collapsing. Demersal Longline Fisheries are catching our sharks, and exporting the meat to Australia, where it is sold in Fish ‘n’ Chips under the name of Flake. The team driving the campaign to address the situation, finally got the government to take notice, and eagerly await a review panel’s decision regarding shark fisheries in South Africa. We’ve listed the highlights of the issues in this post (link below), and need your help in taking action to help save our sharks. https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10157235498577665&id=80871762664
We can't wait to be up and running again with our field research program soon. In the meantime, check out some of the projects we've been busy with over the last year. https://www.facebook.com/80871762664/posts/10157154317227665/
