Thank you @buddyshelpers for your generosity and donations last week. By helping young people get into the habit of giving, it creates a new generation of donors who support organizations like Family Rescue, allowing us to continue to assist victims of domestic violence and their children for as long as we're needed.

This is the last day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To celebrate and empower our clients living at Rosenthal Family Lodge, the staff put together a party where clients could paint heels and draw self-portraits, to express themselves through art. They loved it and really took their time to show their best work. At the end, they held a candlelight vigil, where clients could remember those unable to be with them.

Even though #dvawarenessmonth is ending, we hope your awareness doesn't.

Everyone's talking about Gabby Petito. But they're having the wrong conversation, experts say.

The publicity garnered by #GabbyPetito and her story must force a tough conversation about the prevalence of domestic violence in the US and create solutions to save move lives. The CDC reports that over half the women murdered in this country are killed by their current or former boyfriend/husband. It happens more than you think.

Violence against women is common. Over half of female homicide victims are killed by a current or ex-male partner. Women of color are most at risk.

Amid surge in gun incidents across US, heartbreaking stories of domestic violence | Nightline

Too often, because of the stigma associated with domestic violence, our community is left out of conversations about how to curb gun violence when the two are deeply intertwined. You cannot talk about one without recognizing the other. Nightline does a good job of highlighting this in their story. Thank you for bringing light to this little-discussed correlation.

More than half of women killed by guns are killed by family members or intimate partners. Telina Huffman was one of these women. Her death was just one of th...

A year ago, Family Rescue, along with Metropolitan Family Services, Sarah's Inn, and shortly after, Between Friends joined together to create the Legal Advocacy Helpline. The helpline has allowed us to expand our services to more clients and because of it, more survivors of domestic violence were able to gain a sense of safety from their abuser. We are thankful they continue to trust us to accompany them on their journey towards a violence-free life.

Speaking out against abuse is not always a readily available option for people experiencing relationship abuse. We know that abuse thrives in isolation and that it walks hand-in-hand with fear.

It's okay to have questions about why a survivor didn't speak sooner. What we can’t do, however, is point fingers at the victims and blame them for not speaking out sooner. We are not in their shoes, and we will never know exactly how they feel.

Today, the children at Rosenthal Family Lodge traced and cut out their hands to put around trees in their neighborhood. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month and even during this pandemic, we must remember the importance of reaching out to someone who you think might be struggling - offer a helping hand, if you will. Together, you can make a difference.

New city report on battling crime problem highlights domestic violence in Chicago, and contends it may be significantly underreported during pandemic

Family Rescue was honored to be part of this report and making sure domestic violence is included in any conversation about community violence.

General information

Family Rescue is unique in several ways: we are the only single purpose domestic violence agency on the south side of Chicago; we are one of only two domestic violence agencies in Chicago to allow mothers with teen boys into our shelter to avoid causing more trauma to the mother and children; and we are the only domestic violence agency in Chicago with a presence in both criminal and civil court, AND the Chicago Police Department. The families that Family Rescue serves often need a myriad of services and we have built strong relationships with community partners to be able to provide for their needs in the best possible way.

We're proud to recognize the anniversary of our Legal Advocacy Helpline, and our partnership with Sarah's Inn, Between Friends, and Family Rescue to provide support for those affected by domestic violence, despite the challenges posed by #COVID19.
Today marks the one-year anniversary of our legal advocacy helpline, a collaboration with Family Rescue, Sarah's Inn, and Metropolitan Family Services! You can reach the legal advocacy helpline at 708-689-3422. Over the past year, Between Friends' team and these other agencies have received over 4,000 calls, helping to ensure that court advocacy services continue to be provided to survivors on an ongoing basis with as little interruption as possible, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19. Our legal advocates provide remote assistance with Order of Protection paperwork; support during virtual hearings; safety planning; crisis management around legal options; and referrals for further resources. What do callers to the helpline say about it? “You have absolutely been a ray of light in this super traumatic time! You are incredibly supportive and nonjudgmental, and have provided so much information and help... I cannot thank you enough.”
Did you know that Between Friends is part of a legal advocacy helpline, together with Sarah's Inn, Metropolitan Family Services, and Family Rescue? This helpline (708-689-3422) was established in the spring, as a response to the impact of COVID-19 on the court system. Between Friends' court advocacy staff are working with our partner agencies to provide a service that is desperately needed by survivors: an alternative to going to a courthouse in person during this pandemic. We provide callers with emotional support, safety planning, help with remote paperwork, and resources and referrals -- and we even accompany clients to Zoom court sessions. It's another example of how Between Friends has responded to COVID-19 and adapted to meet domestic violence survivors' needs at this most urgent time.
Thank you to EVERYONE who has donated so far to Safe & Sound for this year's Annual Benefit for Family Rescue and the Children living in Domestic Violence Shelters. Thanks to you, so far, we've raised $750. Safe is matching that with $250 bringing us to $1,000!! We still have a ways to go. Our goal is $2k. If we can get support for another $750, we'll again match with another $250 donation. We're also accepting new toys/games! Donations are being taken until Friday, September 18th. Thank you so much to those who have already helped or have made commitments. Anything helps. Everything is appreciated. #StaySafe 💙

Research Opportunity for Survivors of Unwanted Sexual Experiences California State University-Northridge is conducting research with survivors of an unwanted sexual experience whose work or employment was (directly or indirectly) affected by the experience. This research will be used to better understand if and why an individual may tell someone at their place of employment about an unwanted sexual experience, and how this disclosure may affect their feelings about their workplace. Participating in this research study will help us to understand how places of employment can better support their employees who have had these types of experiences. If you have had an unwanted sexual experience since the age of 18, and are 18 years of age or older, we want to hear about your experience and your decision to disclose (or not) to someone in your workplace. If you told someone at work about this experience, we want to hear about the support you received and how this experience affected your feelings about your workplace. If you did not disclose to anyone in your workplace, we would like to hear about why you decided not to disclose. To thank you for your time, at the end of the survey you will be offered the opportunity to enter in a raffle to win one of twenty Visa gift cards in the amount of $25.00 each. Support service referrals will also be provided to participants. Please follow this link to participate in a 30-minute survey: https://uic.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9WtBCxi3wXJa70p Research participation is anonymous. We will not be collecting any information that can identify you. Feel free to share this post, but remember that you are doing so publically. CSUN IRB Protocol #IRB-FY20-19.
