Everyone's talking about Gabby Petito. But they're having the wrong conversation, experts say.

The publicity garnered by #GabbyPetito and her story must force a tough conversation about the prevalence of domestic violence in the US and create solutions to save move lives. The CDC reports that over half the women murdered in this country are killed by their current or former boyfriend/husband. It happens more than you think.

Violence against women is common. Over half of female homicide victims are killed by a current or ex-male partner. Women of color are most at risk.

Amid surge in gun incidents across US, heartbreaking stories of domestic violence | Nightline

Too often, because of the stigma associated with domestic violence, our community is left out of conversations about how to curb gun violence when the two are deeply intertwined. You cannot talk about one without recognizing the other. Nightline does a good job of highlighting this in their story. Thank you for bringing light to this little-discussed correlation.

More than half of women killed by guns are killed by family members or intimate partners. Telina Huffman was one of these women. Her death was just one of th...

A year ago, Family Rescue, along with Metropolitan Family Services, Sarah's Inn, and shortly after, Between Friends joined together to create the Legal Advocacy Helpline. The helpline has allowed us to expand our services to more clients and because of it, more survivors of domestic violence were able to gain a sense of safety from their abuser. We are thankful they continue to trust us to accompany them on their journey towards a violence-free life.

Speaking out against abuse is not always a readily available option for people experiencing relationship abuse. We know that abuse thrives in isolation and that it walks hand-in-hand with fear.

It's okay to have questions about why a survivor didn't speak sooner. What we can’t do, however, is point fingers at the victims and blame them for not speaking out sooner. We are not in their shoes, and we will never know exactly how they feel.

Today, the children at Rosenthal Family Lodge traced and cut out their hands to put around trees in their neighborhood. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month and even during this pandemic, we must remember the importance of reaching out to someone who you think might be struggling - offer a helping hand, if you will. Together, you can make a difference.

New city report on battling crime problem highlights domestic violence in Chicago, and contends it may be significantly underreported during pandemic

Family Rescue was honored to be part of this report and making sure domestic violence is included in any conversation about community violence.

We are so grateful to the Amour Genesis Project for thinking of Family Rescue and making such a difference in our clients' lives during this time of uncertainty.

The Amour Genesis Project is honored to have donated over $600 hundred dollars worth of groceries, hygiene items, PPE supplies, cleaning supplies, beauty products, and kids educational items to our friends at Family Rescue yesterday afternoon! And we’re proud to say that there’s more coming! Several of our sponsors #LusterProducts and #UniversalBeauty will also be donating haircare items for the women at the shelter as well.

Thank you to everyone who helped donate towards helping me make a difference for Chicago’s underserved communities through my non-profit organization. I really appreciate all of the help and support that I’ve received since this initiative started over a month ago. Because of you guys, I’ve been able to donate over $8,000 in essential items and groceries to Chicagoans who need it most. Each day there have been donations pouring in to help make a difference for those in need, our seniors, our essential workers, and even for those who just simply need access to basic things that they shouldn’t have to pay for such as gloves, masks, and hand sanitizer. We’re all in this together and I really appreciate you guys for being so generous and helping me make an impact for our city. ❤️ #TheAmourGenesisProject #ChicagoStrong #SocialEntrepreneur #CommunityPhilanthropist #ChicagoProud #FamilyRescue

General information

Family Rescue is unique in several ways: we are the only single purpose domestic violence agency on the south side of Chicago; we are one of only two domestic violence agencies in Chicago to allow mothers with teen boys into our shelter to avoid causing more trauma to the mother and children; and we are the only domestic violence agency in Chicago with a presence in both criminal and civil court, AND the Chicago Police Department. The families that Family Rescue serves often need a myriad of services and we have built strong relationships with community partners to be able to provide for their needs in the best possible way.

Research Opportunity for Survivors of Unwanted Sexual Experiences California State University-Northridge is conducting research with survivors of an unwanted sexual experience whose work or employment was (directly or indirectly) affected by the experience. This research will be used to better understand if and why an individual may tell someone at their place of employment about an unwanted sexual experience, and how this disclosure may affect their feelings about their workplace. Participating in this research study will help us to understand how places of employment can better support their employees who have had these types of experiences. If you have had an unwanted sexual experience since the age of 18, and are 18 years of age or older, we want to hear about your experience and your decision to disclose (or not) to someone in your workplace. If you told someone at work about this experience, we want to hear about the support you received and how this experience affected your feelings about your workplace. If you did not disclose to anyone in your workplace, we would like to hear about why you decided not to disclose. To thank you for your time, at the end of the survey you will be offered the opportunity to enter in a raffle to win one of twenty Visa gift cards in the amount of $25.00 each. Support service referrals will also be provided to participants. Please follow this link to participate in a 30-minute survey: https://uic.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9WtBCxi3wXJa70p Research participation is anonymous. We will not be collecting any information that can identify you. Feel free to share this post, but remember that you are doing so publically. CSUN IRB Protocol #IRB-FY20-19.
