Happy Children's Day to all you kiddos out there! 🎈

'Children are not the people of tomorrow, but people today. They are entitled to be taken seriously. They have a right to be treated by adults with tenderness and respect, as equals. They should be allowed to grow into whoever they were meant to be - The unknown person inside each of them is the hope for the future.' 💭 Janusz Korczak

Kazimierz Funk (1884-1967) was a Polish biochemist and a pioneer in vitaminology, who discovered vitamins and their importance to human health. Funk’s hypotheses on the importance of vitamins laid the foundation for modern dietetics and led to many discoveries in the field of nutrition.

Funk graduated from the Warsaw Gymnasium in 1894 and later continued his education in Switzerland. In 1904, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Bern under the leadership of professor Stanisław Kostanecki. After completing his studies, Funk worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and then at the Lister Institute of Preventative Medicine in London, where he investigated the causes and prevention of beriberi, a fatal disease prevalent in the Far East at the time. During his research, he discovered that the bran husk of rice contained thiamine, vitamin B1, a substance which he found to be beneficial in the prevention of beriberi.

Funk was certain that such substances were necessary for the proper and healthy functioning of the human body and could naturally assist in the fight against various diseases. He coined the term “vitamin” and hypothesized the existence of vitamins B1, B2, C and D. His work led to the prevention of beriberi, pellagra, rickets, scurvy, and other diseases caused by vitamin deficiency. In 1914, Funk published his book, “The Vitamines,” which attracted the interest of the scientific and medical community, bringing him international recognition.

In 1915, he moved to the United States and was appointed head of the Research Department of the pharmaceutical company, H. A. Metz Company, where he made the first artificial version of adrenaline. In 1922, Funk successfully created and marketed the first vitamin supplement containing vitamins A and D, called “Oscodal.” He was also an associate professor of biochemistry at Columbia University Medical School from 1921 to 1923.

In 1923, he returned to Poland to take the position of Director of the Biochemical Department of the State Institute of Hygiene in Warsaw, and later moved to France, where he established a laboratory named Casa Biochemica. Following the onset of WWII, he returned to the United States in 1940 and became president of the Funk Foundation for Medical Research. During his career, he also conducted research into hormones, diabetes and the biochemistry of cancer.

Since 1995, the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America annually presents the Casimir Funk Award to Polish-American scientists.
