The Fight Against Pandemic Hunger Is Far from Over

"Food insecurity cuts across communities, often affecting those who never thought they’d be in such a position — something that’s never more true than in this pandemic era."

Like us, food banks all across the country are working to end food insecurity. Even with hope on the horizon with the pandemic, the fight to end hunger now is still prevalent. Read how the Food Depository and other food banks are helping our neighbors in need in The Kitchn story: https://bit.ly/3Afbu9o

We talked to food banks around the country to see what's changed and what still needs to be done.

We recently visited our partners at Windsor Park Lutheran’s community garden in South Shore. Last harvest, fresh produce from the garden went to feed 50 households at the church’s pantry. They hope to do the same this year. Stay tuned for more about Windsor Park Lutheran, one of our recent grant recipients, in an upcoming blog post!

In West Englewood, a new food pantry opens at corner of hope and heartache - Greater Chicago Food Depository

“One of the main principles of our faith, and what is strongly stressed, is feeding people, feeding the poor, feeding the hungry, and also helping your neighbors.”

One of our partners, Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) has worked to uplift the Englewood community by providing opportunities for job training, promoting art and mental health, and expanding access to healthy food. A new grocery store, expected to open in the fall, will be apart of their holistic vision for the corner of 63rd and Racine.

South Shore’s Fight for Food – South Side Weekly

“We reach out and we find out who are the stakeholders, who are the key people in those communities, because we don’t want us telling the community what they need, we want to partner and for them to tell us what their needs are."

For decades, systemic inequities and racial injustice have left South Shore residents without adequate access to nutritious food. We're working with our partners and local organizations to end food insecurity and its root causes in the community. Read more in this article from South Side Weekly: https://bit.ly/3hgNb24

As the City looks beyond the pandemic, residents of South Shore say there’s a long way to go to address food insecurity.

We're so grateful to the Care for Real food pantry and other partners who proudly serve our LGBTQ neighbors. Thank you for being a welcoming place during #Pride and beyond!

“We’re providing a safe space and serving the q***r community, which I’m a part. It gives me a tremendous sense of pride.” Meet Gregory, the executive director at @cfrchicago, a food pantry in Chicago that serves a large LGTBQ community.

“Historically, the LGBTQ community is vulnerable,” he said. “Many may not have a ready support system because they’ve left their homes. I think that’s why many are more at risk of facing hunger.” And, Gregory knows that asking for help can be even harder for the LGBTQ community, “especially now with so much anti-trans sentiment,” he said.

That's why the food pantry provides a warm, caring and safe environment. "We always greet people with a smile. We want to be welcoming,” he said.

The Care for Real food pantry is just one example of the incredible work being done by LGTBQ leaders across the Feeding America network. We're thankful for all they do! ❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜

We believe a healthy community starts with food.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is ending hunger every day—providing food for those in need today and working to eliminate the root causes of hunger in our community.

Founded in 1979, the nonprofit Food Depository works with more than 700 organizations and programs—food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, children’s programs, older adult programs and other partners—across Cook County. We distribute the equivalent of 159,000 meals every day.

And Chicago’s Community Kitchens, our intensive 14-week job training program, gets unemployed and underemployed adults into restaurant and foodservice jobs that can lead to sustainable careers. For more information, visit chicagosfoodbank.org or call 773-247-FOOD.

There has never been a Thanksgiving where I have been so thankful for what I have after seeing so many families lose so much. I just made a donation on their site. Will you?
My husband and I are discussing a cash donation to your charity, but with the proviso that our names NEVER be mentioned in any marketing or on any published lists, and that we NEVER receive any mail or emails from your organization. Is there any way of arranging this? We have actually stopped donating to several charities because of the constant, unrelenting harassment through the mail and online. I realize this sounds rude, but we allocate our charity dollars carefully and anonymously. The only thing we want in return is a tax receipt.
