We're celebrating the one-year anniversary of our supply chain career programs! Over the last year, 25 students – half of them women – have completed job training for their new careers in the competitive and in-demand warehouse, logistics and supply chain industries. We're so proud of our students for their hard work and dedication! Learn more about our FREE programs: https://www.chicagosfoodbank.org/job-training/

“I don’t care about getting it perfectly right 100% of the time. If I progress even by an inch, I’m internally happy. Because it means I learned, I adapted, and I’m ultimately getting better.”

Starting a new career takes courage. When Briana felt stagnant during the pandemic, she signed up for our warehouse job training to get out of her comfort zone. During #WomensHistoryMonth, we're inspired by Briana's confidence and career journey! Read her story: https://www.chicagosfoodbank.org/blog/new-job-training-program-provides-new-outlooks-on-life/

International Women's Day

Today is #InternationalWomensDay: an opportunity to celebrate women’s accomplishments—and to acknowledge the challenges and inequality that women and girls continue to face. As we reflect on women’s innumerable contributions to our own history, we are immensely grateful to all those who have worked towards the broader anti-hunger movement.

Thank you to all of the women across our network of pantries and programs working to alleviate hunger in our community! 💚

'Whole New Generation' Turning To Food Pantries To Feed Their Families, After Double Whammy Of Pandemic And Inflation

"Rising grocery prices, rising fuel prices, rising home heating expenses are causing many more families ... to make the difficult tradeoff between buying groceries or keeping the house warm.”

The Chicago Hope Food Pantry is taking care of families amid rising costs and loss of work due to the pandemic. Get a firsthand look at how our essential partners are providing food – and hope – for our neighbors:

“They can’t make their dollars go the way they used to. Even shopping at some of the cheaper places is not helping them,” said Maggie Jordan, director of Chicago Hope Center.

“People say I can’t do it, and I say, ‘What’s your barrier? We’ll figure out together’.”

Ending hunger and its root causes is personal for Melissa. Not only does she oversee the Above and Beyond food pantry – she also runs The Puerto Rico Project, a nonprofit providing aid to people facing homelessness, substance abuse and other challenges. She says her life experience allows her to relate to those who come through her pantries doors.

Food pantries offering therapy sessions? Yes, and more.

"If a family came through our doors, they'd get 90 pounds of groceries every single week, no questions asked. But then, mom could go to aerobics, the kids could go to our safe havens, our e-learning support centers. After school, they'd get a mentor, they can put their kids in sports outreach . . . "

Across our community, food pantries and programs are providing food to meet the heightened need – but they're also doing so much more. See how partners across our network are providing wraparound services in this story from Crain's Chicago Business:

It's part of a trend—kicked into high gear by COVID—where social-service agencies are moving beyond their traditional specialties to try to deliver whatever their clients might need.

Woodlawn church continues to inspire - Greater Chicago Food Depository

Just a few blocks away from Chicago’s south side lakefront, The First Presbyterian Church of Chicago opens its doors to pantry guests. Director Gail Robinson uses the pantry as an opportunity to ensure neighbors get the proper nutrition they need. Black History is our history. Our work could not be done without the leadership of individuals like Dr. King, Jacques Diouf, Rep. John Lewis, Shirley Chisholm and our partners working in the community – food pantry and program partners, volunteers, donors and advocates. We honor #BlackHistoryMonth and all who dream of a day when access to healthy, nutritious food every day becomes a reality for everyone.

Column: South suburban food pantries say spike in food prices has increased need

"This is affecting people who have been working hard to get back on their feet after job losses, lost hours, lost savings.”

People across our community are struggling to get food due to rising groceries prices. Food pantries are working hard to meet the growing need, but too many of our neighbors are being forced to seek help. Read how food prices are impacting hunger and see how our network is helping in this Chicago Tribune story: https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/daily-southtown/opinion/ct-sta-knowles-column-st-0222-20220221-e23wsw6lzjcrtedh5nqbspxzty-story.html

In addition to rising grocery prices, people are grappling with higher home heating bills and gasoline prices. After paying basic household expenses, for many there’s often not enough left over for food.

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we're highlighting Black volunteers across our network who are helping provide food to families in need.

Sherrie Dentley started volunteering at the Food Depository in 2020 because she wanted to engage with her community amid the pandemic. She now serves as a Volunteer Ambassador, assisting other volunteers and helping repack sessions run smoothly. What keeps Sherrie coming back is the fact that all of her hard work will directly benefit someone facing hunger.

“It’s just a very warm feeling you get knowing you’re helping someone.”

We're so grateful to Sherrie and all of our volunteers! 💚

Food is a basic human right.

Jacques Diouf advocated endlessly against hunger and malnutrition. Through his work with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Diouf helped raise awareness about food insecurity through World Food Day. His work continues to be an inspiration for our work across Chicago and Cook Country. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we thank Black leaders for advocating to #EndHungerNow throughout the world.

🏆Thank you!! Carmen, Luis and Maddie A00681🎄
There has never been a Thanksgiving where I have been so thankful for what I have after seeing so many families lose so much. I just made a donation on their site. Will you?
My husband and I are discussing a cash donation to your charity, but with the proviso that our names NEVER be mentioned in any marketing or on any published lists, and that we NEVER receive any mail or emails from your organization. Is there any way of arranging this? We have actually stopped donating to several charities because of the constant, unrelenting harassment through the mail and online. I realize this sounds rude, but we allocate our charity dollars carefully and anonymously. The only thing we want in return is a tax receipt.
