Chicago-based service and leadership program grounded in social justice, faith, and community.

10/27/2026

Right now, our 12 Amate House fellows are on the ground across Chicago, doing the hard, selfless, vital work of uplifting our most vulnerable communities.

This year will challenge them in ways they never expected. It will stretch their minds and soften their hearts. And it will create lasting change in a world that desperately needs it.

Please consider making a gift of any amount to Amate House today. In this new chapter as an independent nonprofit, your generosity helps us build what comes next—for our fellows, for our city, and for our future! 🏠❤️🌎

Curious where our fellows are putting their love into action? Here are a few highlights!

📍 Annie Chen provides legal services to underrepresented families at the Greater Chicago Legal Clinic.

📍 Jonathan Mendez cares for underserved behavioral health patients at the Chicago Family Health Center.

📍 Olivia Nystrom offers assistance and companionship to seniors at Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly Chicago.

📍 Madelin Sitton supports students’ spiritual, emotional, and moral development as the Campus Minister at Lady of Tepeyac High School.

📍 Grace Lynch educates and empowers victims of domestic violence and abuse at Sarah's Inn.

Every one of our 12 fellows is making a difference throughout the city. Your gift to Amate House doesn’t just enrich their lives; it multiplies their impact where it’s needed most!

The story of Amate House began 42 years ago with the faith, love, courage, and support of our founding board, including one extraordinary woman named Sister Mary Ellen Nolan, R.S.M.

Sr. Mary Ellen worked tirelessly to secure the funding needed to open our doors and transform the empty convent in Old St. Patrick's Church into a welcoming home for our fellows. 🏠

She scrubbed floors, made beds, painted walls, and poured her energy and prayers into this community, even as she battled terminal cancer.

She would have been so proud to meet this year’s fellows—12 remarkable young leaders from seven states, all united by a shared purpose: to serve and uplift Chicago’s most vulnerable neighbors.

What started with Sr. Mary Ellen’s act of love continues today with your support! ❤️

Last night, the fellows joined the McKinley Park Development Council for their monthly speaker series. We learned about McKinley Parkways and the Chicago Park District's Rethinking Lawns project. How cool to have two biodiversity initiatives right in our backyard!

"Somehow, these people who were strangers not long ago already feel like people I have known for much longer. I cannot help but wonder how much I would have missed had I not taken this opportunity. I came into Amate expecting to learn about faith-based service and social justice. I did not expect to learn so much about myself through eleven other people with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives."

Be sure to check out Mehreen Shahid's blog post reflecting on the first month of work and community life! We can't wait to see what the next nine months have in store for this cohort 💕🕊💕
