Didn't see any lions but definitely saw the lights-on 🦁🎄 #throwback to when house coordinators Unity and Katie surprised Amate fellows with tickets to one of Chicago's favorite holiday traditions: a night of ZooLights! We miss the warmth of these dazzling displays amid the frigid, Chicagoan winter. Alumni, how did you survive the season? ❄️

New Blog Post! Amate House fellow Ingrid reflects on the everyday moments that have made her Amate experience so impactful. Read along to experience a night in the life of a fellow at McKinley Park house.

"At the same time, I realized that this comical moment was a moment I was going to remember about my year. We finished scooping up the leaves, and I turned to face the large tree in front of our house covered in lights and ornaments. The moon was glowing right behind it, and I felt myself inhaling that moment and calm washing over me."

In 2021, Amate House witnessed 35 fellows open up their hearts to Chicago and to one another during very difficult times. Each have been a blessing to this organization and the communities they serve alongside. We look forward to a bright future for our current fellows and the many alumni who’ve dedicated themselves to putting love into action.

From all of us at Amate House, have a happy and blessed New Year! 🎉

New Blog Post! Amate House fellow Katelyn reflects on how life as a fellow has shifted her perspective of home.

"I was one of the first people to arrive back to Little Village. I remember thinking to myself that it felt so good to be home. Obviously, traveling takes a lot out of you, but just walking through the door gave me this sense of joy and comfort I haven’t felt in a long time."

Amate's Associate Board

Our Associate Board plays a big role in engaging both current and former fellows. This alumni-led group of young professionals aims to cultivate and preserve a sense of community among past and present members of the Amate House service and leadership program.

The AB coordinates alumni socials, a winter volunteer-service-year alum retreat, and an annual fall fundraiser. Members of the board engage their personal and professional networks about the program, volunteer at Amate House programmatic events, and provide a professional networking platform with which current fellows can engage.

Community Nights at Amate House

Community nights are at the core of our fellowship program at Amate House. Fellows typically gather for a meal and activity centered around one of Amate’s five tenets each Wednesday night. The program staff prepares a variety of community nights, covering diverse topics like community dynamics, poverty, discernment, and racial justice. Throughout the year, we bring in engaging speakers from around the city to dialogue with our fellows. Fellows also help to plan several community nights throughout the year.

Retreats at Amate House

Retreats are one of the most important aspects of our program, providing a welcome respite for fellows from a busy schedule and acting as significant inflection points for growth and reflection throughout the year. Here’s a closer look at how Amate House incorporates retreats within our service and leadership program.

Fun Facts: Amate House has accompanied fellows on nearly 100 retreats in its 38-year history. We take two weekend retreats (fall and winter) and one week-long closing retreat at the end of the year. Past retreat themes have included “Discovering our Strengths,” “Love in Action,” “Called by God (Discernment),” and “The Vocation to Love.”

"Eight months into my junior year of college, I packed up my apartment, said goodbye to all my friends, and moved back home. There, I finished out the remainder of my junior year and the entirety of my senior year virtually, completely isolated from any community — with the exception of my family, of course.

We've been trying to soak up as much sunshine as possible before the days start to get cold and dark. But the change of seasons means we get to look forward to the holidays, which will be here before we know it. In the meantime, we'll keep practicing our self care. Former fellows, what were your means of self care and thwarting the winter blues during your year in community?

The red & green natural jade gemstone beads seem perfect for this St. Ann Chaplet as she is often portrayed in art wearing red & green, representing love & life. Very fitting for the "Grandmother of Jesus!" Consisting of 3 Pater Noster beads, 15 Ave beads, a simple cut out style Miraculous medal & a medal of St. Ann, this chaplet is a favorite of Canadians, Detroit residents, grandmothers, horseback riders, housekeepers, mothers, & women in labor... all of whom claim St. Ann as their patron. #CatholicGifts #CatholicFamily #Catholic #HolyFamily #Chaplet #BlessedisShe

If you missed Tuesday's conversation about our partnership with Amate House and the Jesuit Volunteer MAGIS program at Loyola University Chicago, featuring Lauren Jhin and Katie Athis, you can watch it here: bit.ly/312Jdm6 #TheVoiceOfCharity
Amate House and the Jesuit Volunteer MAGIS program at Loyola University Chicago offer young adults the opportunity to gain valuable leadership and service experience while living in Chicago. Catholic Charities is one of the not-for-profit agencies where these young adults volunteer! Tomorrow, #TheVoiceOfCharity welcomes Lauren Jhin and Katie Athis to discuss how the program has expanded their knowledge of themselves, and of the world.
Practicing gratitude is an important facet of the healing process. Our Amate House fellow holds with reverence the gratitude shared by women in our program in Cook County jail. *** Image shows a young woman smiling in front of a poster filled with written words of various sizes. The largest words, "Kids... Mother... Sobriety... Second Chance... God," show the most frequent expressions of gratitude within the group. The young woman is quoted, "I am often left reflecting on just how much I have to be grateful for and how much work there is do to to bend the arc towards justice."
It is that time of year once again when we begin to think about our New Year’s Resolutions. Resolving to pray the rosary daily would be a wonderful resolution to consider! A good way to help keep the resolution spark alive is to have a special rosary that looks and feels great in your hand. We offer rosaries made from a number of natural materials with a variety of bead sizes and weights…. Some feel very substantial and some are very light weight. We have a rosary to suit almost everyone. Take a look at our many offerings, and make the resolution to pray the rosary each day in 2021 and for decades to come!
