“Poverty is killing us,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said last week at the City Club of Chicago. “Literally and figuratively killing us. All of us.”
Applauding Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot for prioritizing and tackling the issue of "eliminating poverty within the next generation," beginning this Thursday with the launch of the 'Solutions Toward Ending Poverty (STOP) Summit.'
Household incomes are rising across Chicagoland, yet "22 percent of Chicagoans still live in conditions of poverty." 22 percent of Chicagoans live with incomes below the Federal Poverty Level, which is an annual income of $26,200 for a family of four.
"The summit will open a conversation about the racial history of poverty in Chicago, and begin a process of engaging communities to find solutions, said Dan Lurie, Mayor Lightfoot's policy director."

Incredible mid-day conversation, discussion, and call to action! This is how we stay motivated on a dreary Monday - listening to amazing women leaders talk about what we need to do to close the gender equity gap.
Felicia Davis was joined by Cherita Ellens, Women Employed, and Dorri McWhorter, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, in a conversation moderated by Karen Jordan Farr this afternoon at the City Club of Chicago for a full-house event.
Some tips shared during the lively discussion:
- Hire women for their potential. Mediocre white-men have received enough breaks
- Use the data about diverse boards to hold companies and organizations accountable
- Walk-The-Talk - institute workplace policies that put humans first and support women and families at companies and nonprofits. Invest in women-led and minority-owned businesses for your services
