BLM means BFM: The Foster System Hurts Black Families & We Must Include Black Mothers in the Fight for Justice - Shriver Center on Poverty Law

Amazing article from Shriver Center on Poverty Law

"No longer can we afford to leave the foster system out of conversations about racist policing or juvenile legal system reform. Black families are surveilled and ultimately separated because of racialized determinations made about their parenting or ability to do so. Instead what should actually be judged, are the economic divestments experienced by marginalized communities fueled by structural racism and bias – the very same things that led us to mass incarceration"

For Black lives to matter, Black families must matter. Black mothers must matter. What the criminal legal system is to Black men, the foster system is to Black women.

Illinois' eviction moratorium set to expire Oct. 3

"The most recent iteration of the moratorium, which will expire Oct. 3, allows for court proceedings but prevents law enforcement from carrying out an eviction.

It also allows for evictions in health and safety circumstances, and for "uncovered persons," which include those who refuse to fill out paperwork for assistance, who can't prove loss of income from COVID-19 or who earn more than $99,000 individually or $198,000 as a joint-filing household."

It's International Women's Day and today we are celebrating the amazing women who have led our organization. Over the last 70 years, we actually haven't had that many changes in leadership, but like most organizations, those leaders have been men. Barbara Smiley was our very first Executive Director, back when there weren't very many women in those roles and were professionally addressed by their husband's names (Mrs. Karl Smiley). She was officially named to the role in 1959 and held it until 1974. *more on Barbara in this week's Throwback Thursday. Kim Cornwell is our current Chief Executive Officer. She came on board with EP!C (PARC) in 1988 and has been serving as CEO since 2010. Kim is a Member of the Illinois Partners for Human Service State Board and a Co-chair of the Peoria chapter. She is the Immediate Past Chair of the Institute on Disability and Public Policy for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and a Past Chair of the Heart of Illinois United Way Executives Board. May we continue to break barriers, collaborate, and celebrate our female leaders! #internationalwomensday #BeEPIC #Empower #Inspire
