Less than a month ago, some of you may have been surprised here in the US when there was a national test of the emergency alert system sent to everyone's phones. Because of Japan's vulnerability to fast-moving natural disasters, their first line of defense to warn people and give important information is instead the ubiquitous loudspeakers. But don't be scared! The loudspeakers work, and they are tested every day in most populated areas of Japan. These "5 O'Clock Chimes" (五時のチャイム or goji no chaimu) are different locally, and each area has its own local jingle or short song to play every day.
