Wow! Just amazing!

Check this out. What you're seeing here is a "sprite"--a fleeting, red-colored high altitude lightning discharge which occurs above some thunderstorms. They're so fleeting, sprites are difficult to photograph. Yet nature photographer Paul Smith, who has developed quite a reputation as exceptionally talented at capturing nocturnal (nighttime) optical phenomena, caught this "sprite"--also referred to as a "red sprite" on a country road in Oklahoma last Wednesday (4/21/2021). The appearance of "sprites" has has been described as like a glowing "jellyfish blob".
Sprites are a unique form of lightning and they occur high above thunderstorms. They can be as much as 30 miles across. But unlike lightning discharges which occur in the lower region of our atmosphere (the troposphere--the the lowest 4 to 12 miles of our atmosphere) and emanate from precipitation-bearing regions of thunderstorms, sprites occur at altitudes of 31 to 56 miles above Earth in a region of the atmosphere known as the "mesosphere" and they DON'T COME from the precipitation- producing region of a thunderstorm. They last just milliseconds and and are triggered by positively charged lightning discharges from t-storms below them.
The first record of a sprite was in 1730. For years, pilots had reported seeing colored lightning discharges out of the tops of t-storms. But, interestingly, the first known photograph of the phenomenon wasn't made until 1989 by scientists at the University of Minnesota.
Interestingly, a sprite, is believed to have caused a high altitude NASA research balloon 120,000 ft. above Texas to release its payload without instructions from the ground to do so.
