Our Story
With the construction of Truman College fifty years ago, and the displacement of five hundred families, Voice of the People in Uptown launched with a rallying cry that echoed across the city -- “Development Without Displacement”.
In the decades that followed, Voice emerged as a leader and survivor among community-controlled corporations -- building homes and acquiring, developing and managing affordable housing, and engaging in partnerships to assure long-term affordability.
Uptown is now the center of Chicago’s vibrant north lakefront, flush with reinvestment activity and benefiting by improved commercial, public and private services. However, the goal to achieve and maintain a sustainable, mixed-income and diverse community is as relevant now as it was fifty years ago. Next generation strategies will be required for owners to prosper while providing mixed-income housing, and for low-income and working class renters to access the best services and opportunities Uptown has to offer.

Congratulations on your Office Move!!
We are working to save the personal belongings of our brothers and sisters who suffer homelessness. This photo was among items being thrown in a dumpster. We saved it along with a Veteran's precious family photos and important paper work. One of the men in this photo taken in the 1970s helped people. We are trying to help him and I wanted to share about our efforts and this beautiful photo.
