Illinois Lawmakers Move Forward With Repeal of HIV Law

Last week's 90-9 House vote to repeal IL's HIV disclosure law, while just the first step in the process of decriminalizing HIV statewide, is still huge. Chicago House TransLegal thanks our coalition partners, the Illinois HIV Action Alliance, and lead sponsor Carol Ammons for their partnership in HIV decriminalization.

HIV advocates in Illinois say the disclosure law is not based on science and is a barrier to ending the epidemic.

Yesterday's verdict, while an important step toward accountability, is not full justice; no sentencing can replace George Floyd’s life. This verdict serves as a strong step in the right direction for Black and Brown Americans but the fight for racial justice is far from over. IHAA Commends the Illinois House of Representatives for Voting to End Criminalization of HIV — IL HIV Action Alliance

Sharing a huge legislative win from yesterday: the IL House of Representatives voted to end the criminalization of HIV!

Today, the Illinois House voted to approve House Bill 1063 in a bipartisan vote (90 – 9), which would end criminal penalties against people living with HIV (PLWH). Under current law, PLWH face the threat of arrest, prosecution, and incarceration even if they do not transmit HIV to another person.

HIV is not a crime!

Take action to end HIV criminalization in Illinois!

bit.ly/yesSB655

People living with HIV (PLWH) should not be criminalized for their HIV status. But current Illinois law makes legal behavior – like consensual s*x – illegal and adds harsh penalties for ordinarily minor crimes such as sharing injection-drug equipment. Together we can end these harms that impact PLWH and disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ people, women, and Black and Brown communities.

Email, tweet and call your legislators to demand they vote YES for SB 655 to repeal Illinois’ discriminatory and stigmatizing HIV criminalization law.

Join me in demanding that Illinois state senators vote YES on SB 655, which would repeal Illinois' outdated, discriminatory and stigmatizing HIV criminalization law!

Supporting Transgender Visibility at Chicago House — Chicago House

"Visibility is important for one another as it gives others hope and light, and to let each other know we aren't alone. This is especially true for our siblings who are not yet able to be visible.” – Ash T.

Today is Transgender Day of Visibility. We asked three members of the Chicago House community to share why they choose to be visible and how Chicago House has supported them in their visibility. Read their stories here: https://www.chicagohouse.org/stories-2/transgender-day-of-visibility
#TransgenderDayOfVisibility #TDOV

Every year on March 31st, we recognize International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV). Visibility means different things for different people in transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) communities. To many, visibility means showing up as one’s most authentic self; to many others, visibilit...
