We had such a magical time at our Holiday Toy Drive this past Saturday! And we have so many people to thank for helping us raise over $10,000 in cash, collect over 1,000 toys, and help bring a bright, gift-filled season to over 500 children and their families!

First, let's thank all of those who donated toys, including these companies and organizations: Walgreens, VIVE Church, Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts Girl Scout Daisy Troop, C+R Research, DocuSign, DFIN, Coonley Elementary School 8th Grade Class, Segal, Conexiom, Meta, Donnelly Financial Solutions, EMPIST, and Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates - WJE.

And thank you to all the individual cash donors! A special thanks to ChicagoCAC board members who contributed funds to provide families with grocery and other gift cards in addition to toys and gifts!

And last but not least, we would have been considerably less jolly without our fabulous volunteers, pictured below.

Adults Groomed Students At Logan Square School — But That’s Not Always Illegal. A New State Bill Could Close The Loophole

Faith's Law, or HB1975, was one of our top legislative priorities this year and recently passed during legislative veto session. The law closes a gap in how grooming is defined in the criminal code and increases survivor protections. These additional protections, had they been in place at the time, might have changed the trajectory of investigations at Marine Leadership Academy. We worked closely with Rep. Michelle Mussman and advocate Faith Colson, for whom the law is named, throughout the year to ensure the bill's passage, and we too await its signing by Gov. Pritzker.

Faith Colson was our Mission Moment speaker at our fall fundraiser A Night of Heroes, where she shared her survivor story and urged our guests to support HB1975. We know her advocacy will go on to protect current and future students - and we wish, for all survivors of educator sexual abuse, that Faith’s Law had existed sooner.

Faith's Law would make it illegal for adults to lure children into sexual relationships in person. Staffers at Marine Leadership Academy in Logan Square have been accused of grooming students.

This morning, along with the rest of the city, ChicagoCAC learned about instances of sexual harm that occurred at Marine Leadership Academy, a CPS school. This information was shared at a CPS news conference with statements from CEO Pedro Martinez and in multiple news stories shortly thereafter. Here's a link to a Block Club Chicago piece: https://bit.ly/3x6bN5d

We are extremely saddened to know this harm occurred, likely over multiple years. We support the survivors, students, parents and staff struggling to understand how this could have happened at their school. We also are glad that CPS took action against these staff. CPS has a strong code of conduct policy which supported them taking this action.

ChicagoCAC continues to fight for changes in statewide policy and legislation that reduce loopholes in student protection. Some of our highest priorities are protecting students experiencing grooming and those who are still in school over age 18 from being victimized by those who are responsible for educating them and caring for their safety and welfare. These issues are directly relevant to some of what we have heard about the incidents at Marine Leadership Academy.

During this most recent legislative session, we worked with State Representative Michelle Mussman and survivor advocate Faith Colson on HB1975 (Faith’s Law). This new legislation helps to close some of these loopholes for all schools. It does so by enhancing the definition of grooming in the criminal code, adding “grooming” in the definition of an abused child in ANCRA (the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act), and expanding the definition of sexual misconduct in the Illinois school code to align with longtime CPS protocol.

Faith’s Law currently awaits Governor Pritzker’s signature. Given today’s news, we call on him to sign Faith’s Law as soon as possible - Illinois’s students cannot afford to wait for the protection they deserve.

Last year, my dad was diagnosed with cancer while I was in graduate school which inspired me to complete my Master's Thesis on a cancer related topic. On behalf of my research mentor and 3 other group members, I am sharing a link on your page as we are currently Occupational Therapy graduate students conducting a research study regarding the implications of pediatric cancer and how it impacts social health. We greatly appreciate your time, willingness, and consideration to help us advance the field of pediatric cancer! Visit advancingparenting.org. We are a small nonprofit pioneering a new kind of child abuse prevention and a new kind of parenting education…one that reaches everyone, everywhere, all the time. One of our activities is distributing parenting tips bumper stickers. Parenting tips on vehicles will be read 1000s of times by 1000s of people of all ages for years to come! The tips are parenting behaviors and practices generally recognized as supporting the healthy development of children and they focus on character, mental health, and intellect. Individuals, schools, businesses, organizations, and agencies can place them on their vehicles. Schools, businesses, organizations, and agencies can also place sets of the fifty-one bumper stickers on counters and tables so parents, workers, customers, patients, and clients can help themselves. Instead of a few human parenting educators in a community teaching poorly attended classes, every vehicle becomes a parenting educator doing its job day in and day out 365 days a year!! This is proactive, participatory, public parenting education and we hope it will be a game changer for the prevention of ACES (adverse childhood experiences). Visit advancingparenting.org to see examples and the list of the fifty-one parenting tips bumper stickers. Call or email us for more information or if you would like to order one sticker or multiple sets of the fifty-one bumper stickers. 😊
